Today we’d like to introduce you to Yvonne Sanchez.
Hi Yvonne, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In 2001, recently divorced and a single mom, I returned to the Jacksonville area to rebuild my life. I was a public school teacher by day and a dreamer by night—determined to create something lasting for my family. On August 1, 2001, I opened Ole Mexican Restaurant and began working for Duval County Public Schools—all on the same day.
Starting the restaurant took every penny I had, along with countless favors and support from my parents. Just weeks later, the world changed with the events of 9/11. Like so many others, I was afraid—not just for our safety, but for the future of the country and the business I had just poured my heart into.
Thankfully, the economy held steady, and I held on. Through years of tireless work, long days, a growing family, and unwavering dedication, Ole Mexican Restaurant not only survived—it thrived. What began as a leap of faith has become a true success story, and I’m endlessly proud of what we’ve built.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We’ve weathered some of the toughest challenges over the years—9/11, the decline and eventual closure of Regency Mall, the Great Recession, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Each one tested our strength and resilience, but we endured.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Ole Mexican Restaurant?

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Some of my favorite childhood memories were made on the fields and courts of Orange Park High School, where I spent countless hours playing sports. One of the proudest moments of my life was earning a full track scholarship to Florida Community College at Jacksonville—making my parents proud and turning a dream into reality.
