Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
I was born and raised in the Middle East and came to the United States right after high school graduation with a dream of being a physician. Growing up, I admired physicians’ compassionate care and dedication to their patients. I worked hard to be a board-certified physician. After a few years of working in corporate medicine, I experienced a moral injury. As a physician, I faced the harsh reality of failing corporate healthcare systems and impersonal and automated protocols with little time for patient health and patient-physician interaction. The traditional healthcare system limits patient-physician interaction, focus on billing and coding, and provides no continuity of care. I wanted to do medicine differently. I decided to pursue a concierge primary care model with my private practice. Concierge medicine works by having a monthly subscription which guarantees personalized medicine with robust preventive care and more time with your physician than the standard sick-visit insurance-based practices. Specialized Clinic LLC was founded to provide excellent quality medical assessment, continuity of care, and seamless appointment scheduling to patients while keeping the patient-physician relationship direct and at the heart of it. The feedback from my patients and community has been overwhelmingly amazing and supportive of this mission.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The most challenging part about taking this journey in the concierge primary care model is many people have accepted the way insurance companies handle our healthcare as the only way healthcare exists. I see many flaws in our current outpatient health systems: Impersonal and brief doctor-patient interactions and sick visits to the doctor are the only time patients attempt to visit their doctors. Patients need to have their doctor spend more time with them to listen to their concerns and approach their problems differently and holistically. Insurance coverage could be used for catastrophic medical issues. However, routine follow-up visits should be with your physician, who is familiar with your medical history and you trust with your health. Specialized Clinic, a private concierge practice, was founded because many patients are tired of how insurance companies dictate medical management and put patients’ health last. Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Finding a mentor means finding someone who shares core values with you. The best way to find a mentor and find someone to mentor is by getting out in the community and finding your niche. Be intentional in your communications and remember your goals while connecting with others.
