Inspiring Conversations with Nick Salter of Salter Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Salter.

Nick, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In my final year of university, I was having trouble identifying what I desired to do with my future. I earned a degree in Finance and started to get acclimated to living in Jacksonville. Throughout my studies, I built a network of friends who were staying local and gained experience in the retail and finance industries through part-time or internship work.

My family has been in the real estate business for over 20 years and I grew up watching my parents own and manage their own brokerage in South Florida. This led me to apply and onboard for a position at a local boutique brokerage as an Executive Administrative Assistant. In my new role, I wore a lot of hats; I was coordinating marketing, finances, and recruiting alongside the Broker/Owner.

This is where I gained a lot of insight as to how business is run and definitely received the hands-on experience I was seeking. However, after months of working in the office, I started to realize the sales aspect of real estate matches my personality type much more than I planned and decided to go for my license and join the team. My boss turned Broker took me in as a mentee and I quickly picked up the fast-paced nature of the real estate and started to take off. After nearly a year on the team, I got the courage to go solo and create a name for myself in the community.

This involved switching brokerages, and lots of trial and error. I left the support and comfort of having business practically handed to me to having to figure out how to earn clients on my own. Which was pretty frightening, but I was confident in my ability. I developed my own marketing techniques, created a brand identity, and became more persistent than I ever thought I could be. Especially because all this happened as a pandemic started to unveil. Fortunately enough, business happened for me pretty consistently.

Right as I got the hang of working independently, my family in South Florida decided to merge their company with a national brokerage, COMPASS. I was unhappy with the merger at the time because I had intentions of introducing our company to the Jacksonville market at some point down the road. With all that being said, I also ended up switching to Compass as part of our team; The Salter Group. Joining Compass has allowed us to combine our extensive knowledge of the industry with high-end products so we can focus even more on our customers and give back to our communities.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Compared to many others, I can’t complain. I’d say the universe has gone fairly easy on me so far. With the exception of some bumpy roads. Rather than identifying my journey as simple or challenging, I recognize I am still not where I want to be yet. I have many more lessons to learn and as you begin growing, you face other obstacles with that.

I think the biggest struggle for me so far was to learn if it’s not meant to be, it will just simply not be. In the past, I have tried to force relationships and bent over backward for clients who weren’t appreciative at all and ended up leaving me high and dry in the end. Those kinds of situations are never worth it.

If someone doesn’t understand your value immediately, I don’t think there is any point in wasting time trying to prove them wrong. Just focus on those who are happy to work with you and want to watch your business flourish.

We’ve been impressed with Salter Group, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are Salter Group. Family operated and powered by Compass. Our success is the result of the consultative and caring approach we provide to all of our customers. We will be there as your partner through every facet of your real estate transaction and beyond. We provide a superior service to ensure your personal and financial goals are achieved.

Our goal is to make you, our customer for life. We combine extensive knowledge and experience with the cutting edge technology of Compass so whether you are buying or selling we can attain the results you deserve. We would LOVE the opportunity to welcome you into our family and showcase our unique materials and methods.

Half of our team is based in Fort Lauderdale and the other half is based in Jacksonville. We joke that we are working on covering the entire east coast of Florida eventually. While we have experienced many sectors of the business, we primarily focus on waterfront and historic communities. This has come naturally from personally being residents of each. We take great pride in our brand because it is our family name and we work together as such.

It has been years of establishment and regardless of who you are, we strive to uphold our reputation as dedicated and loyal. So whenever someone sees Salter they think, “Yeah. Those are some good people.” We proudly do work to benefit people’s lives, not for personal satisfaction. That is what sets us apart from most.

Recently, we have rolled out a service option known as Salter Group Cares. Giving back is central to who we are so we now present our customers the option to donate a percentage of our commission to a foundation of their choice. We love the opportunity to learn what causes other people to hold close to their hearts. Having the ability to contribute and give back means the world.

What makes you happy?
I feel most happy when I am on track and balanced. It is easy to lose track between running a business, spending time with loved ones, raising a puppy, and giving yourself space. But there seem to be random moments where all of those things collide and it brings me so much peace. I don’t like to overextend myself to the point I can’t remember what day it is or simple tasks I need to complete.

Whatever the opposite of that stuff is, that is what makes me happy. I practice a lot of yoga which teaches me to be in the present and respect my body. I apply a lot of what I learn there into my daily life. I can get better at it, but I have definitely improved a lot from previous years.
