Inspiring Conversations with Mona Amyra of Happy French Teacher

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mona Amyra.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
How Happy French Teacher Came to Be

It all started with two great loves: teaching and globe-trotting. I’ve always been a teacher at heart—just ask my little sister, who was subjected to homemade worksheets at the tender age of 8. I was living my best educator life. She was… less enthused. But hey, every visionary needs a reluctant test subject.

Then there’s travel. Born in Paris, raised under the Egyptian sun, I’ve zigzagged across Europe, enjoyed Australia’s warmth and beauty, wandered through New Zealand and Thailand, and explored the souks of Morocco and the wonders of Lebanon. And through it all, one thing was clear: travel feeds my soul.
So I thought, why not blend these two passions into one career?

Boom. Happy French Teacher was born.
An online haven where students can learn French from anywhere—whether they’re sipping espresso in Paris or stuck in traffic in Los Angeles. And teachers? They get the same freedom. No classroom walls, just Wi-Fi and wanderlust.
Fast-forward 12 years, and we’re still très fantastique.

As for the name? That one’s easy. I spent years teaching in schools, and my students kept calling me “the Happy French Teacher.” It stuck. So when it came time to name my business, I didn’t overthink it. I just went with the truth.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Ah, the glamorous beginnings of entrepreneurship—where your first paycheck barely covers a croissant. One student. Twenty bucks a week.

The secret? It’s not flashy. It’s not new. But it’s undefeated: don’t quit. Not when it’s slow. Not when it’s quiet. Not even when your bank account starts side-eyeing you. And especially not when that little voice in your head whispers, “This will never work.”

And let’s be honest—it helps to have a partner who cheers you on, reminds you why you started, and, in my case, actually brings home a paycheck. My husband: MVP of moral support and financial stability.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
What helps me do my best in life? Not a productivity app, not a feel-good blog, and definitely not a podcast promising to “unlock my inner CEO.”

Nope. I’m old school. No social media, no digital noise— not outside of my lessons anyway.

Give me a juicy Agatha Christie whodunit, an Amelia Peabody escapade through ancient tombs (yes, I’m that person who’s obsessed with Elizabeth Peters’ Egypt), or a classic Friends episode where Chandler’s sarcasm is in peak form—and I’m thriving.

Add a little yoga to the mix, and it’s game over for stress.

But when the world feels heavy or my mood needs a reboot, I head to my happy place: the beach. It’s my reset button. My peace. My sanctuary. My place to breathe, reflect, and remember that life is indeed beautiful.
