Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Akel.
Hi Jessica, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Coming from a family business of 30 years, I was raised with the mindset that hard work, consistency, and heart are the keys to building something meaningful. My parents taught me to work for what I want and to never be afraid to chase big dreams—and that’s exactly what I’ve done with Luna Shears Salon.
After years in the beauty industry, I decided to create a space of my own—one where luxury meets comfort, and clients feel genuinely seen and cared for. From the moment Luna Shears opened its doors, it’s been more than just a salon. It’s a reflection of everything I’ve learned: to lead with passion, to serve with purpose, and to create beauty that empowers.
This journey has been full of growth, late nights, and unforgettable milestones and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Every challenge has shaped me into a stronger business owner. Opening Luna Shears came with its share of growing pains navigating financial risks, balancing work and personal life, and managing the pressure of building a brand from the ground up.
There were times I questioned if I was doing the right thing, especially during long nights renovating the space or facing unexpected setbacks. But through it all, I stayed focused on my vision. I leaned into my support system, trusted my gut, and kept reminding myself that nothing worth having comes easy.
Those obstacles taught me resilience, patience, and the power of community and I’m so proud of how far Luna Shears has come.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Luna Shears is a salon in the heart of Jacksonville that focuses on high-end hair services with a personal touch. We specialize in luxury hair services, bridal styling, blonding, and custom color offering a curated experience for every guest who walks through our doors.
What sets us apart is the environment we’ve created. Luna Shears isn’t just a place to get your hair done. It’s a space where clients feel relaxed, empowered, and part of a community. Every service is rooted in education, technique, and a genuine connection. We prioritize healthy hair, personalized care, and helping our clients feel confident long after they leave the chair.
I’m most proud of the brand’s authenticity. Luna Shears represents hard work, creativity, and the belief that small businesses can thrive when built with passion and purpose. Whether you’re getting ready for your wedding day or simply wanting to feel your best, we’re here to make every moment behind the chair special.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
My best advice for finding a mentor is to lead with genuine curiosity and be willing to learn. Some of the most impactful connections I’ve made have come from simply reaching out to people I admire and asking thoughtful questions. Don’t be afraid to put yourself in the room. Whether it’s at local events, industry workshops, or through social media.
What’s worked well for me is staying open, showing up consistently, and offering value in return. I’ve learned just as much from peers as I have from mentors, and I believe community over competition is key. Surrounding yourself with people who inspire you and challenge you to grow is one of the greatest investments you can make in your career.
