Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Redman.
Hi Jamie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey began at the age of 39 in Huntington, WV. My son was in college and my daughter was a senior in high school and I said to myself, “I’m gonna go live my dream!”
I have a rare blood disease named Hereditary Spherocytosis. While fighting this disease, I spent some time in the hospital on the oncology floor. During this time, I was able to speak with women affected by cancer. In our conversations, these brave women expressed that they were not necessarily afraid of dying! (They are fighters, so that was the furthest thing from their minds) They were afraid of losing their hair and identity. Women fighting cancer have to wear their sickness on the outside while continuing to be the backbones of their communities, places of work and their households. That is so unfair! I initially began this business with only vanity in mind, but the conversations with these women kept playing in my head and I knew that if there were a way that I could help, then that was what I was going to do.
In 2012, I purchased my 1st wig named Carmen by Model and fell in love! Shortly after I enrolled in college to study business as well as register my business! March 21, 2013, Get Your Wig On was born! Get Your Wig On, LLC. is a Christian based business promoting the empowerment of women. Our Mission is to simply “Ignite The Beauty In You!”
Within my first year of business, I kicked off the very 1st Wig Parties in Huntington, WV, sponsored the 1st Cancer Awareness Event (with free wigs, customization’s, applications, massages, makeup applications and manicure services) followed by the very 1st Hair Extension Sew-in Party. Shortly after, I received a proclamation from Mayor Steve Williams and declared December 14, 2013 the official Get Your Wig On Day! With the help of my community, I have been able to successfully continue to honor women fighting cancer with a free fully customized high quality wig.
In 2016, I Graduated from Marshall University Community & Technical College with an A.A. in Business Administration Applied Science and Management Technologies with honors. In September 2016 I relocated to Florida – I moved to continue my education in hair and to put my business on a larger platform. 2018, I began furthering my education by attending a cosmetology program at AAC in Jacksonville, Florida and became a licensed cosmetologist in July 2019. Today, I’m 49 years old and Living the Dream! I’ve recently secured a private salon studio on the Southside of Jacksonville and I’m open for business. I am an all around stylist to ALL women with a specialty in color, blowouts, cuts and wigs/extensions.
Over the years, I’ve had some ups and downs! I’ve been told… I’m too old, I wouldn’t make it, that I should just offer a lower quality of products because no one will buy top quality and to just take my degree and go back to corporate America! What I’ve learned from this journey is that sometimes being alone is where God wants me to be, everyone who starts with you won’t end with you, God will place people in your path to be a blessing and a learning experience, you’re never too old, and last but not least… God is faithful!
I thank everyone who has been a part of my journey! Good or bad, I am better for it!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing is EVER smooth! And if it is, It’s probably not worth having.
My biggest blow was four days after sponsoring my first cancer awareness event, my mom was diagnosed with cancer. She is currently a fighter of Multiple Myeloma.
This was one of the lowest moments of my 1st year in business. It was a blow unlike any other. But God!
As you know, we’re big fans of Get Your Wig On. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Get Your Wig On is a black-owned, Christian-based premium online wig boutique promoting the empowerment of women along with confidence and security. Our mission is to simply ignite the beauty in you! “Your Day Starts In The Mirror!” Thank you for starting it with us!
What sets me apart is that I only work with the highest quality of raw human hair in order to render the most natural look possible. I am the couture of wigs. My wigs are professionally designed, cut, colored, and styled by me. I don’t cut any corners! Let’s face it, your look is an investment. I will give you your money’s worth and with proper care, your unit will last for years if not a lifetime.
I’m an all-around stylist, so my services extend far beyond just wigs. I’m obsessed with coloring and cutting. I offer everything from Brazilian Blowouts, Balayage, and Fashion Coloring to Extension Application Services along with Wig Application services, but my 1st love is wigs.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me in this business is empowering women. We work so hard on our identity. Our day really starts in the mirror.
When women look and feel good after we leave that mirror, we tend to pay it forward with the giving of our time and talents throughout our day. If we don’t look good when we leave the mirror, we don’t want to be seen. We are the backbones of our communities, businesses, and of our households.
Beside every great man is a what? A great woman! We run the world! Women, especially cancer fighters should not have to wear their sickness on the outside. That’s not who they are and I help them keep their identity and/or ignite the beauty in them. This is my ministry and my purpose.
