Today we’d like to introduce you to Irie Cameron.
Irie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started college while serving in the US Army. I studied accounting. After finishing my term in the military, I opened my first business in Savannah, GA, Camerons Services, a janitorial service specializing in move-in and move-out cleaning.
A military airfield is located in Savannah and tenancy turnover rates are high so I so it as an opportunity to do what I had been doing all my teenage years as my father was a property owner in Jacksonville, FL. We could turnkey property in three days. While working as a Credit Analyst for Citibank In 2007, I answered an ad for a Bookkeeper/Tax Preparer.
I had big dreams and corporate America didn’t seem like it was going to get me there. Working at that firm I was able to implement what I learned in college; the inept ability to read, interpret and implement. In 2010, I had my last child and moved to Hawaii, and while over there a few clients and military friends reached out to me asking if I could still prepare their taxes for them. I said “Yes.”
After 3 years of preparing taxes out of my home, via the internet. It came to me in a dream (all my money moves come to me in dreams) that I should probably open a Tax Service and so I did. The first year in business went great, 6 figure income, was able to teach over 15 people how to prepare taxes and 5 business partners how to run their own tax preparation business in which I receive residual income as long as those businesses prepare taxes; LOOK AT GOD.
It’s 2022, I’m still collecting, in the tax world, it’s called service bureau fees. Tax Business is a seasonal business, so it gives one a lot of extra time throughout the year. After a few years of traveling, and sitting home, I needed to do something with my time and most importantly this money. In 2017, I met my partner and who owns a paver installation company. I started working as his full-time bookkeeper, and office manager.
I realized within a few months that he needed to be in control of his paver movement and that he could because the jobs were priced with delivery. Instead of outsourcing the deliveries, he could in turn purchase a truck. Once we purchased the truck, we noticed that after making the deliveries the truck was sitting. How can I make money with this truck? Let’s put this truck and trailer for hire.
I worked as a dispatcher for one truck, six months later we bought another truck, Leased our authority to other drivers, and made 6 figures in no time. It was a lot of work, but the money that was coming in reminded me of tax season but this time it was all year. LOOK AT GOD!!In 2019, we decided to open a Paver Supply company in our favorite beach town, change 2020 Nair needs trademark symbol.
With the Destin area being so rural, I would need to become a Freight Broker, that way we could compete in the market in Panhandle by being in control of our freight and our customer’s freight and be able to pass on savings because unlike other Hardscape supply companies in this area, we have Freight in our control.
So this is how I became a Tax Preparer/Franchise Owner/Trucking Company Owner/Freight Broker Remaining Hairless is near and dear to my heart because I suffer from PCOS and I have a lady beard. For years I have tried to mask this horrible condition. How many others are hiding or depressed about it?
Luckily for me, my partner is open-minded and very supportive of me especially when I have days I don’t feel like shaving or burning my skin with depilatories, LOOK AT GOD.
I think he realized that this imbalance of hormones was beneficial to him in other ways, lol!! Y’all know what your Uncle says about women with beards, lol! I’m like Nair works well but it stinks like HELL and it’s hard to conceal what you are doing when using it. I wonder if I could make a No Smell Cream that is just as effective and guess what I sure did. I teamed up with the PCOSAAssociation and went to work.
I work with celebrities and social media influencers, and go to conferences, Women’s Shows all over the nation to educate people on PCOS and its symptoms, and most importantly Hirsutism. Informing the masses how remaining hairless can help them with their hirsutism control.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not a smooth road, at all. Making money in the first four months of the year and having to stretch it out for the rest of the year.
This is not a task for the faint at heart. Also, retain employees especially in the tax business because preparers, once they learn enough, will either steal your clients or start their own business and most do it underminingly, the crazy thing is they don’t have to because I can help them in the business. Logistics side: DRIVERS. You are always hiring drivers.
They too try to X out the middle man if they can. You just have to be careful when allowing people to have first-hand dibs on how you do business and the clients that you serve. Always get NON-COMPETE and make sure you have an attorney on retainer, ready to sue whomever when your contract is breached.
Employees can be some lying conniving individuals, have an Employee Handbook
