Today we’d like to introduce you to Diamond.
Hello Diamond, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Well…my background is actually military but I’ve always had a passion for beauty. I started doing makeup in 2014 inside of the Hair bar Jax and wanted to be licensed so I enrolled and completed an Esthetics Program. While I was in school, I learned about the many facets of the beauty industry and fell in love with Permanent makeup.
I knew that I wanted to learn from the creators so in 2019, I went to visit Seoul, South Korea, (many people don’t know they’re the beauty capital of the world) and took my first Permanent makeup class. To Be totally honest it took me about a year or so to take the newly learned skill seriously.
Once I started getting the feedback from my clients and saw the impact I made on their confidence…I knew that this was my niche and something I wanted to turn into a business so I went really hard to perfect my craft.
Starting out I was still working my 9-5 (military) so after I would get off and on weekends I would do clients, some were paid clients but many were not. For me it wasn’t about the money, it was about developing/perfecting my skill set and techniques.
I would (and still do) take lots of pictures to study my work. I am never afraid or consider myself too knowledgeable to be “the student” and learn from another, not just within my industry but in general.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have been and are many challenges I still face as a Permanent Makeup artist. A big one is Respect. When people ask what it is that I do and I tell them it’s always like “oh that’s cute” Many people think this is a hobby or something I do in my pass time. I remember having a conversation with someone and after telling them what I did, their response was “so do you have a real job?” But in all honesty, I’m not bothered by it. My perception is that since my industry is still fairly new to the American culture, I will have to continuously educate people on and market it and these are some of the things that come with the journey.
Management is another big one. With this industry I’m sure as with others, there are really really hot seasons and then there are really really slow seasons and your management skills are tested. Knowing how to balance, sticking to a budget and making sure to put enough money up for the slow seasons is a major key to keeping your business running.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
There is such an age gap between my sister and I, that while I was Growing up it was almost like I was an only child. I was a wild child, a tomboy that loved to hang out with the boys and wrestle & had cornrows going straight to the back. Crazy thing is I was still always into girly stuff….I liked to wear dresses and polish my nails.
