Inspiring Conversations with Colin Murphy of MYCO-Medix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Colin Murphy.

Hi Colin, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Based in St. Augustine, Florida, Myco-Medix is a federally and state-certified Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) dedicated to improving brain and body wellness through the power of functional mushrooms. My path here wasn’t a straight line. When I retired from the military, my mind and body were not in a good place. I got tired of pushing constant pharmaceuticals and needed to find something natural and different.
I started out obsessed with performance and recovery while working with athletes and spending time around veteran communities where I kept seeing the same gap: people were juggling stress, sleep issues, and mental fog, but the solutions felt either overhyped or overly pharmaceutical. I wanted something clean, transparent, and grounded in real ingredients.
That curiosity pulled me into mushrooms—Lion’s Mane for cognitive support, Cordyceps for stamina, Reishi for relaxation, Turkey Tail for gut and immune health. I started off EXTREMELY small, working in my study under Cottage Law Operations with only two tinctures. I grow the four mushrooms mentioned and turned them into tinctures for easy consumption by way of a Dual-Extraction.
It started off with late nights formulating, growing, and building relationships throughout the community. As we grew, I made a deliberate decision to go about it another way: I needed to get into the wholesale/retail market—HACCP plans, FDACS reviews, cGMP procedures—so customers and retailers could trust what was on our labels. I started working with another local Veteran that owns “The Local Refillery off of West King Street where I now grow my mushrooms and utilize their approved kitchen to make the tinctures.
From there, momentum built. We expanded from tinctures and are now developing a signature gummy line to make daily routines easier, along with the launch of three different coffee blends infused with Mushrooms. A big unlock has been partnering with like-minded businesses and advocates who genuinely use the products, not just for a post, but because they care about mental clarity, recovery, and longevity. In parallel, I’m helping stand up a non-profit initiative focused on veteran and athlete mental wellness to push research and education forward. The business fuels the mission, and the mission keeps the business honest.
Where we are today is simple: Myco-Medix is about bridging performance and wellness with authenticity. We keep formulas clean, doses meaningful, and testing transparent. We spend as much time educating as we do selling. And we’re building a brand that stands for impact over hype. I’m proud of how far we’ve come, and even more excited about what’s ahead. The sky is the limit for Myco-Medix!!!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This has not been an easy road to say the least, however, it’s been purposeful, not smooth. I’m a one-person show who contracts out specialists (labs, designers, and clinical physicians), so I’ve had to juggle everything from educating customers about functional mushrooms to enforcing real quality standards. Agriculture is variable, and learning to control consistency—dialing in dehydration procedures and verifying specific water activity for stability took time and money. If the FDA wanted a certain analysis on my tinctures, I had to prove it by sending off samples to third-party labs and present the findings. Navigating DSHEA/21 CFR rules, FDACS reviews, labels, and logs was another heavy lift; I rewrote procedures more than once. Cash flow and supply hiccups forced me into smaller, faster production cycles and tight forecasting by way of lean production and continued process improvement (CPI). Retail buyers wanted proof, not promises, so I built momentum store by store with clean ingredients that taste amazing. And with strict FTC/ad policies, I leaned into education and transparent dosing instead of splashy claims. The upside: those constraints made the brand disciplined—systems, testing, and documentation that now earn trust with customers and retailers.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Myco-Medix is a Florida-born, Veteran-Owned wellness brand built around functional mushrooms for brain and body performance. We keep the line tight and purposeful with Lion’s Mane for clarity, Cordyceps for stamina, Reishi for calm, and Turkey Tail for gut/immune support—offered as simple tinctures and in our mushroom coffee/lattes. We’re known for clean formulas, meaningful dosing, and education over hype. What sets us apart is that everything is designed for real life—athletes, veterans, and busy parents who want benefits they can feel without adding friction to their day. Brand-wise, I’m proud that people describe us as trustworthy before they say trendy; the mission is impact, not noise.

And yes!!! The gummies. We’re rolling out a signature mushroom gummy line with no preservatives or artificial colors, so staying consistent is as easy as grabbing your daily chew. Think Lion’s Mane–forward focus support and Cordyceps-driven stamina options, with clear labeling and the same no-nonsense approach as our tinctures and coffees. If you’re new, start with Lion’s Mane in the morning, Reishi in the evening, swap a Cordyceps latte before training, and add the gummies when you want a grab-and-go routine you’ll actually stick with.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Operational integrity… doing the right thing even when it’s boring, especially when no one is watching, is the quality that’s moved Myco-Medix forward. I’m a solo founder who contracts specialists, so success comes from being relentlessly clear, consistent, and honest: listening to customers, saying no to shortcuts, and building simple systems that work every day. That looks like tight formulations, labels that match reality, and process discipline—testing, documentation, and even dialing in dehydration until products are stable and reliable. It’s not flashy, but that integrity compounds: retailers trust us, customers feel the difference, and the brand earns its reputation one clean batch, one clear explanation, and one good cup of coffee or daily gummy.
