Inspiring Conversations with Amanda Asker of All Things Funkadelic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Asker.

Hi Amanda, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My husband, Jerry, and I have many years of service industry experience. We met at Jerry’s family’s restaurant in Jacksonville. After dating for a few years, we began to toy around with the idea of starting our restaurant, allowing Jerry to execute his culinary creativity. After shopping around at different brick-and-mortar spaces available, we quickly realized the cost needed to be financially feasible. Amanda jokingly suggested opening a Food Truck so they could “travel the world” while selling food while truly not having a single clue that was not exactly realistic. In any event, we went for it, so Funkadelic Food was created. We hustled the streets of Jacksonville, FL, for 5 years. It was challenging at times but oh-so rewarding at the same time. Being within Jacksonville’s first 20 food trucks was like creating a movement. We’re honored to have the title. After 5 years of serving Funkadelic deliciousness, we decided to take the leap and sell our positions, food truck unit and move to St. John, USVI. Three short months of living in paradise got hit head-on by Category 5 hurricane Irma. And so back to the states, we went. We decided to build out another food truck, purchase a home in Butler Beach and plant our roots in beautiful St. Augustine. 2 food trucks later (one for catering – the other permanently parked waterfront at English Landing Marina – 509 S Ponce de Leon Blvd). Here we are at All Things Funkadelic Retail * Catering space expanding the Funk to more than just food – we now have a space to share creativity with the community allowing local artist and vendors to showcase their work within our walls. Although the fun continues, we are excited to have an eclectic facility where events and ideas can come alive!

You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
Not! When we began this journey, I was 8 months pregnant—tackling a new venture while extremely pregnant was challenging. We loved this space, so that we couldn’t pass up the opportunity. It truly has been a marathon! Furthermore, financial times are tough for so many right now; limiting extra spending presents a huge obstacle, especially for a new business and a small business. Please support local! 🙂

We’ve been impressed with All Things Funkadelic, but for folks who need not be more familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Our vision here at All Things Funkadelic is to bring life to the south end of Anastasia by offering a fresh concept of retail and event space. All Things Funkadelic incorporates pieces created by local artists and vendors and our own Funkadelic apparel. All Things Funkadelic event space is a unique find allowing guests to host a special occasion while utilizing Funkadelic Food catering service – Catering Food Truck on site. Let us make your next event an epic, memorable, and, most important Funky good time! Everything about Funkadelic is unique! How could it not be?!
