Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Jones.
Hi Alicia , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have been a nurse since 2009. I have worked in mental health/ substance abuse, home health, and corrections. I was deposed as the nursing expert for the company I worked for (corrections) and during that time, I received a random email about legal nurse consulting and it sounded interesting. I am always looking for new opportunities to advance myself, so I started doing some research. I ended up taking a course to obtain a certificate. I formed Jones and Associates Legal Nurse Consulting, LLC in 2021. Since that time, I have worked with a few attorneys both plaintiff and defense, and a company that supplies health care workers to correctional facilities (along with their attorneys) to bolster their side of the cases they are working on. The attorneys know the ins and outs of the law, I know the ins and outs of nursing. Together we are stronger. I know what should be in a record that may be missing and the attorney may not know to ask for. I can assist behind the scenes creating timelines and reports or performing research. I can also provide expert witness services for correctional cases. I am part of a legal nurse community with thousands of amazing legal nurse consultants from all areas of nursing all over the country so if I don’t know an area, such as obstetrics, I have associates that do. We work together and build each other up.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has had it’s upside and downs. Marketing and business ownership is not something they teach you in nursing school. You really have to step out of your comfort zone to make yourself known. Word of mouth has been my best marketing tool. It took me a long time to get my first client. Someone had put that they were looking for a correctional nurse expert on our Facebook group and I, with an immense feeling of imposter syndrome, jumped in and said I would. This has helped me to grow my client base as I have been referred from attorney to attorney. The company that supplies health care workers to correctional facilities found me by my LinkedIn profile.
As you know, we’re big fans of Jones and Associates Legal Nurse Consulting, LLC . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I work with attorneys, both plaintiff and defense, behind the scenes to create chronologies and reports to support their side of the case as well as in an expert capacity for correctional cases. Working with both sides allows me to see and think about the case from both sides and know what the other is thinking. I am most proud of the word of mouth referrals that I have received. Knowing that the job I completed created a satisfied client that would share my name with acquaintances in need of the same services is very fulfilling.
Legal nurses can help in so many ways: medical malpractice, personal injury, product liability, worker’s comp, and basically anything where medical records are involved.
While I do not work with individuals, they can request to have a legal nurse help with their case.
How do you think about luck?
It all started with luck of the draw, where I was the nursing expert for the company I worked for. I was scared and had no idea what I was doing. The case was settled and never went to court. Since then, I think good luck has played a big role in my business. As I said earlier, we are not taught marketing. When someone asks for help on Facebook or LinkedIn, I throw my name in the ring, and that has led to multiple new clients by referral. It has also led to lifelong friendships with other LNCs across the country.
