Today we’d like to introduce you to Tammy Hodo.
Hi Tammy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am from Milwaukee, WI and am multicultural (biracial). I left Milwaukee to serve in the US Navy. Upon completing my contract, I attended Albany State University, a Historical Black University, for my undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice. Upon graduating I attended Columbus State University where I obtained my master’s in public administration. My husband was an Army Officer (retired now) so we traveled the world for over twenty years. During that time, I attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and obtained my Ph.D. in Urban Studies with a minor in Sociology and a focus on race, class, gender and ethnicity. My dissertation is entitled: “A Critical Analysis of an Urban Research University: Climate, Culture and Minority Faculty.”
I taught at universities as an adjunct as I moved around the country with my active-duty Army husband. As he prepared to retire, I took a position as the inaugural Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Florida Coastal Law School. I moved on to do one year as a visiting professor in Sociology at the University of North Florida. When I completed that I decided to open a business as I knew I could have a larger impact and audience. Currently I work with cities, federal agencies, businesses and nonprofits on transforming workplaces into havens of trust, respect, and empowerment. Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, there have been struggles as we cover inclusion and the concept of that has been convoluted, such as diversity and equity. We lost our contract with the City of Tampa, which we had for four years as the Governor went to each city with his own DOGE Team and reviewed contracts to ensure that nothing was being taught that was “woke philosophy.” The contract we had was labeled as diversity awareness and microaggressions. The contract was stopped. The “Culture Wars” have impacted our business in a negative way. It is harder to find contracts in my space and competent is intense.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
