Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie & Brian Woerndle.
Hi Stephanie & Brian, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Brian and I started dating in 2008 and immediately bonded over our love of dogs, travel, and renovating. We spent our first Valentine’s Day together, tearing out a wall and repainting our kitchen! Our first years together were spent road-tripping across the US in our MINI Cooper and completely renovating our home. Before long, we’d moved on to upgrading the homes of friends and family. In 2014, after a series of unexpected losses in our family, we realized that life was short and unpredictable and we shouldn’t put off chasing our crazy dreams. We quit our jobs, bought our first sad, neglected little foreclosure, and turned it into an adorable home ready for a new family. At that point, we were hooked. We renovated and sold another home before we decided that we were tired of working in the cold and snow and would much rather make sunny Florida our new home base. We packed up my mom, our Pomeranian, six cats, all of our tools, stuffed us all into an RV, and headed to Florida to start a new adventure. Through an odd series of coincidences, we met a real estate agent who introduced us to Nocatee. Brian fell in love with the community. I wasn’t so sure. I’d had my heart set on renovating one of the old homes in Saint Augustine, but Brian persuaded me to give it a chance and promised that if I hated it, we could move. We lived in the RV for seven months while we waited for our new home to be built. We purchased, renovated, and sold another fixer-upper in Jacksonville.
Don’t tell Brian, but he was right. Moving to Nocatee led to amazing transformations in our lives and our business. Before long, our neighbors had asked us to do decorative upgrades to their homes. We fit in a few small projects when we weren’t working on a renovation, but before long, we were enjoying the pretty projects our neighbors wanted more than tearing out walls and nasty carpeting in a rehab. We started small, doing tons of shiplap walls, and built our way into board and batten and wallpapering, and before we knew it, we’d been talked into building a small built-in. And then we were off and running. We left behind the rehabbing and renovating old houses and threw ourselves into adding decorative details and built-ins to the homes of our Nocatee neighbors. The community has supported our business and passed us along to their friends. We never expected our business to transform in this direction; we’d imagined we would be tearing out old carpets and scraping down popcorn ceilings for the rest of our days. We enjoy being able to drive to work in our golf cart and share our passion for making homes pretty and functional with our friends and neighbors.
We love exploring Saint Augustine and trying new restaurants when we need help getting working. We take several small trips and two bigger RV adventures every year. Our Corgis, Winnie & Pooka love the RV and exploring the country with us. They’ve visited 26 states and plan to add two more states to their list this spring. Brian and I love where the twists and turns of our adventure have taken us so far, and we’re excited to see where we go next.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No road is ever wholly smooth or as straightforward as we’d hope. Though we wouldn’t appreciate the obstacles as they were occurring, looking back, we see that so many of the roadblocks that popped up detouring us to a much more exciting path. As I mentioned earlier, a brand new house in a vast community like Nocatee hadn’t been my ideal situation. I was dreaming of something old, slightly decrepit, and possibly haunted that we could renovate and bring back to life. I never expected to fall in love with Nocatee and everyone. Rehabbing one house at a time and selling it kept Brian and I isolated ourselves. Doing smaller projects for more clients has introduced us to more people who have become our friends and a special few who have become like family. Our clients push us daily to try new designs and find solutions. We’re always learning and developing new skills, thanks to them.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a custom home cabinet and trim work company at the most basic level. We would take our clients’ dreams for a beautiful, comfortable, and functional home and make them a reality. We specialize in bringing our clients’ wishlists, inspirational photos, dreams, and available space and building beautiful solutions. We are proud to say that this is our business. It’s just the two of us. From the website to the social media to the photos and all of the building, design, painting, quoting, and meeting clients, every bit of the clients’ experience is all us. Yes, we are typically booked out longer than our fellow carpenters, but we want to be the ones that build our clients’ dreams. We never pass our clients off to a subcontractor. Every bit of every project we’ve touched, considered and created ourselves. We’re providing our clients with the same level of craftsmanship and attention to detail we want in our home. Cubed Homes builds custom drop zones, laundry rooms, home offices, built-ins, and wall details.
