Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
Subliminal Dreamz was started in 2020 with the bold mission of addressing mental health stigmas in the African American culture. After attempting to take my own life after my marriage failed in 2019 and after losing my stepson in 2020. I felt like my life was spiraling out of control. I was in a terrible space mentally and spiritually. Once the pandemic hit, my mental health plummeted, and I needed to grieve and cope with everything around me. I had no sense of direction or belonging. As I started healing from different forms of therapy and learning about grief and trauma, I began to learn that these were topics often strayed away from in my community. There were not enough platforms promoting the understanding, approval, and resources that addressed mental health, parenting styles, and stigmas associated with our children’s cognitive development. I saw the need to create and bridge between therapists, counselors, and other health experts and create a vehicle for my community to drive with to access these resources. To change the apprehensions and perceptions on the views of mental health so we can begin to heal as whole individuals and communities. Subliminal Dreamz was created with the mission of creating a big mental health movement that changes the course of history for every culture, not just my culture.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a very humbling road. When you are working and functioning out of passion, getting others to see your vision or support your mission is often hard. Because I have been so passionate and consistent in my efforts with Subliminal Dreamz, my journey has been smoother than I ever imagined. The community has started recognizing me for my efforts and supporting my cause. I have gained phenomenal partnerships with brands like Panera Bread, Publix, and Sam’s, allowing us to continue to address the issues plaguing our communities.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Subliminal Dreamz Inc?
Subliminal Dreamz is a mental health non-profit organization. Our organization prides itself on being a leader in providing resources to the community for mental health, therapy, counseling, clothing, and food resources. We teach mental health first aid to teens to help them understand the signs of mental distress and substance abuse awareness. We provide meaningful community activities to keep young men engaged. We collaborate with schools, organizations, and brands to educate, counsel, train, and provide an array of therapeutic resources to help realign mental health with physical health. We service all ages with various programs to meet the needs of the communities we serve.
What’s next?
Subliminal Dreamz Plans to become a pillar and staple in the Duval community. We aim to build our youth outreach center within the next 3 years to grow our programs. We want to offer before, during, and after school programming for children to meet them in all stages of their academic growth, as we know challenges arise at different times of the day, and we don’t want parents to be discouraged. Children feel like they don’t have an outlet. We want to grow our reading club and increase community engagement and events. We recently won the Positively Jax award in October 2022 for our community contributions and want to grow the recognition and our efforts! Subliminal Dreamz’s future is to keep leading the mental health reform fight and seeking justice for those affected by mental disorders.
