Hidden Gems: Meet Sheila Carr of Gateway Art Gallery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheila Carr.

Hi Sheila, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I joined the Gateway Art Gallery in January 2022, bringing with me a background as a graphic designer and, before that, a photographer. I’ve spent over 20 years working in the non-profit sector, driven by a passion for community-focused organizations and a deep love for the arts and artists. As Curator, I have the privilege of working alongside 35 talented volunteer artists to help arts and culture thrive in our community. It’s the most fulfilling job I’ve ever had, and every day reminds me why I chose this path.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Since stepping into my role as Curator, one of the biggest challenges has been the simple fact that many people in our own community don’t know the Gateway Art Gallery exists. It’s a surprising hurdle, but one we’ve taken head-on with a renewed focus on outreach and visibility. We’ve expanded our presence at local events, built stronger relationships with community partners, and increased our marketing efforts—both online and in person. Every conversation, every flyer, every social media post is part of a larger effort to make sure the Gallery is no longer a “hidden gem” but a well-known and celebrated part of Lake City’s cultural landscape. We still have a ways to go but we’re excited for the future!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Gateway Art Gallery?
The Gateway Art Gallery is home to the Art League of North Florida, a non-profit community arts organization dedicated to bringing the visual arts to life in our region. The Art League is 20 years old this year, and the Gallery just turned 12. We showcase the work of more than 35 local and regional artists, offering an eclectic mix of fine art, photography, sculpture, pottery, jewelry, and handcrafted wares in our gift shop In addition to popular annual events and various rotating exhibits throughout the year, we’re known for our diverse schedule of classes, workshops, and events for all ages, making the arts accessible and engaging for everyone—but especially our Youth Art League, which is our premier art program for young people in our community. Our volunteers teach 40 youth classes throughout the year to roughly 80 children. Next year we are expanding the program to include another session. What sets us apart is our deep connection to the community—we’re run largely by volunteer artists who pour their time, talent, and passion into creating a welcoming, inspiring space for everyone. We’re proud to be a place where art, culture, and community intersect, and where visitors can connect with the people and stories behind the work they see on our walls.

How do you think about luck?
I’ve been fortunate to have opportunities presented to me that have resulted in my being where I am today. Whether by luck or sheer coincidence, I’ve managed to end up in exactly the place where I feel my talents and passions are being put to their best use.
