Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharlyne Carla Rogers.
Hi Sharlyne Carla; please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am an award-winning author, inspirational speaker, and professional editor with an MBA in Management. My story begins in Southern California, being raised by a single mother. I obtained a bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies in Rhode Island and moved to Orlando in 2003. I have published seven faith-based books thus far, and I started writing resumes and editing books for other authors in 2008. I officially started my own business in 2014 and became self-employed in 2015. I relocated to Jacksonville in January of 2022 after surviving narcissistic abuse from an ex-husband. Since moving here, I have acquired another lucrative resume writing contract, created a weekly YouTube series under my Sharlyne Carla brand, and started working on my eighth book. I also enjoy going to the local mall and beaches for much-needed self-care that I could not make time for previously.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Transitioning from corporate America to self-employment has been challenging, but the journey has been worth it. I was laid off from the mortgage industry in 2007 as soon as I published my first book titled “When Heaven Hears Your Prayer.” In 2010, I was laid off from my next job as a resume writer when that company shut down. I finally got a full-time job as an administrative assistant for a commercial appraisal company in 2012. After resigning three years later, I made much more money as an independent contractor. But after a big contract ended that I thought would last indefinitely, my income greatly decreased, my credit score went down to the 400s, and I eventually lost my house after 12 years of ownership. Since then, I have been restored, renewed, and rejuvenated through faith and perseverance to succeed as a state-certified Woman & Minority Business.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a single-member limited liability company, I serve diverse entities by updating resumes and bios, helping first-time authors navigate the publishing process, and proofreading various copies for individuals and businesses. I am known for speaking and teaching about effective writing and spiritual maturity at countless community and ministry events. What sets me apart from most business owners is that I don’t see anyone as my competition. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and gaining wisdom from others because I want everyone to win. I am most proud of the fact that the best source of new clients for me is referrals. I pride myself on being more than just a service provider because I genuinely care about my clients, followers, and subscribers. What I want people to know about my brand is that in everything I do – whether I’m writing a book, consulting with a client, or creating a video – my main goal is to uplift, support, and strengthen someone else.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some changes you expect to see over the next five to ten years?
My industry will probably change over the next few years because new authors will likely self-publish their books. More writers will share their life stories and utilize cost-effective ways to market their products because social media is rapidly evolving. We have gone from just posting written content to sharing photos and videos, and many readers now enjoy e-books and audiobooks instead of traditional paperbacks. With current and future technology tools, we will continue to stream live over the Internet and become more creative in using our unique voices.
