Hidden Gems: Meet Lauren Charlton of Lauren Charlton – Sports Dietitian

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Charlton.

Hi Lauren, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey really started with a love for running at a young age, but it took some unexpected turns that shaped who I am today. I grew up in England and later moved to the U.S. on a track and cross country scholarship, which was a life-changing experience. Competing at the collegiate level taught me a lot — not just about performance, but about resilience, adaptability, and how critical proper fueling is to staying healthy and reaching your potential.

After graduating, I knew I wasn’t ready to step away from competitive running. I’ve continued training seriously, now competing at the sub-elite level in road races across North America, with goals of eventually representing my country. Alongside my running, I pursued my passion for nutrition and became a Registered Dietitian specializing in working with brands from a media standpoint, and athletes too. I am open to working with any brands wanting an expert voice to promote their product, or media companies wanting to promote proper nutrition through written blogs or video appearances. I plan to offer 1:1 online consultations soon, helping athletes of all levels unlock better performance and longevity through evidence-based nutrition which can be found here: https://laurencharltonmediadietitian.my.canva.site

Beyond working directly with clients, I’m passionate about creating social media content on my Instagram @lauren.charltonn that makes sports nutrition more accessible. I love sharing both the highs and the challenges of the athlete lifestyle, combining relatable experiences with practical, evidence-based advice. My goal is to build a community where athletes — whether recreational or competitive — feel supported, informed, and inspired.

Right now, I’m focused on continuing to grow in both areas: pushing toward bigger goals in my running career and expanding my reach as a nutrition professional. I’m excited to connect with brands and companies that align with my mission to make high-level performance feel more achievable for everyone.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road — but honestly, the struggles have shaped me just as much as the successes.

Moving to a new country on my own to compete in the NCAA was exciting, but also overwhelming at times. I had to adjust to a new culture, a new academic system, and a completely different style of coaching, all while trying to perform at a high level. Earning my credentials as a Sports Performance Dietitian added another layer of challenge — navigating licensing and education requirements across two countries wasn’t easy.

As a runner, I’ve faced periods of injury and self-doubt. There were moments when coaches didn’t believe I could make it at the level I was aiming for — and times when I questioned it myself. But every setback taught me how important it is to advocate for yourself, stay consistent, and keep believing even when progress isn’t linear.

Building my own business has been another challenge — learning how to market myself, connect with the right clients, and grow my platform while still training at a high level hasn’t always been easy. But it’s been incredibly rewarding to build something from the ground up that truly helps others perform better, feel better, and chase their own goals.

Those experiences are a huge part of why I’m so passionate today — not just about chasing big dreams myself, but about helping others realize that with the right support and mindset, they can too.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I’m the founder of my business Lauren Charlton Dietitian, where I will work with nutrition brands and soon offer personalized, evidence-based nutrition support for athletes and active individuals who want to perform at their best — whether that’s chasing a personal record or simply feeling stronger and more energized in their everyday lives.

What sets my work apart is that I’ve lived the athlete experience myself. I know firsthand the challenges of balancing high-level training, competing, work, and life — and I know how much of a game-changer the right nutrition strategy can be. My approach isn’t about strict meal plans or unrealistic expectations; it’s about helping athletes build sustainable, personalized nutrition habits that fuel performance, recovery, and long-term health.

I specialize in working 1:1 with endurance athletes, runners, and driven individuals who want practical, real-world solutions — not just textbook advice. I’m proud that my clients often say they feel truly heard, supported, and empowered when we work together. That’s the heart of my brand: education, empowerment, and performance.

Through my online consults, I offer tailored nutrition coaching, race fueling strategies, and performance optimization plans. I also love creating educational content on social media that makes sports nutrition relatable, evidence-based, and applicable to real life — because I believe every athlete deserves access to quality information and support.

Whether you’re a competitive runner, a recreational triathlete, or simply someone who wants to fuel your goals better, I am here to help you make that happen.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my favorite childhood memories isn’t a single moment — it’s the experience of growing up across different parts of the world. I spent my early years in South Africa and then Canada before eventually moving to England. Being exposed to so many different cultures, ways of life, and perspectives from a young age taught me to be curious, adaptable, and open-minded. It sparked my love for travel, for learning, and for connecting with people from all backgrounds — all of which still shape how I approach both my running career and my work as a sports dietitian today.
