Today we’d like to introduce you to Lance Asper.
Hi Lance, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I initially got involved in video production in high school back in 2009 living in Dallas Texas. Then, when I was 22, I moved to Jacksonville to work at a church and worked as a video producer there from 2014-2020, but I was also constantly working on small projects on the side.
When I first got to Jax, I ended up getting involved in something that was called “The Community Sunrise” where a group of photographers and creatives would meet on a weekly basis to build community through Instagram. Through that, I made a lot of connections and learned my way around the city faster than I would have on my own. I am still friends with a lot of those people and most of them are now the main, local photographers, videographers, and other creatives in the area.
In 2020, I went full-time with my own video production house business and now, in 2022, my wife has also joined me. As time has passed, I’ve made more and more connections that have allowed me to be involved in some pretty amazing film shoots and meet some incredible people.
Some of the projects I’ve worked on set with or helped with are: content for FTX at the Cannes Film Festival, LPGA promotions, Yo Gotti music videos, Trevor Lawrence and Shaquille O’Neal commercials sets and Miami’s new “FTX Arena” commercial, to name a few. But even though I’m not working at a church anymore, I still work with ministries like ARC and other local nonprofits like Wilbur Ministries and The Jude 3 Project.
Currently, I have camera gear that I use and rent out in Jax to help further the film culture in the area. There is a small, close-knit group of people here in Jax and we help the community by producing high-end, quality content on a regular basis! I’m passionate about meeting new people to grow that community and about learning how I can continue to be a better videographer because there’s always more to learn.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Most of the struggles I’ve had to deal with are mainly the learning curve of going from being an employee to running my own production and now running the everyday operations of a normal business. Some other things I had to start to learn right off the bat were having a good mindset and knowing the value of my work. One of the hardest things about video production is that people don’t always know what they want, but they can tell you what they don’t want. I learned early on how to talk to clients through their thought processes so that I can provide the content they’re looking for and deliver excellent videos. I’ve spent a lot of time studying and listening to business and leadership professionals to work through it all.
As you know, we’re big fans of Asper Productions. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Asper Productions is a video production business I started in 2020, but I’ve been doing Videography / Editing since 2009 and have 13+ years of experience. I’m mostly known for my drone work, my ability to edit quickly, capturing behind the scenes and event recaps. I think something that sets me apart from others is taking the time to tell the story and find a track that really helps tell that story. I am also very thorough when I film so I have plenty to choose from and use to tell the client’s story. Another thing I like to try to do is always think ten steps ahead to prevent future mistakes or roadblocks on a project.
It may seem a little silly to say this, but I recently turned 30 and I wasn’t afraid of it or upset like I know a lot of people are because I’m proud of the accomplishments I’ve made before turning 30. I’ve been Instagram suggested (back when that was still a thing), had over 330 million views and over 1.6 million downloads of my work on Unsplash, gone to France for work multiple times and been on some high-profile film sets with people I grew up seeing on TV. Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the quality of work I’ve been able to create both personally and professionally all while being able to say I’m having fun doing it!
My goal with Asper Productions is to help everyone see the value in their own business and be able to share that with others through videos I make for them. I believe video is one of the best ways to show what their company is all about. If Covid has taught us anything, it’s that connecting with others is so important and video is one of the best ways to relate with someone’s story which can promote your business and get your mission and vision out to the world.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I’d say being able to listen to a client’s need when they ask for a video and produce something for them to solve the problem they have and give them the solution they are looking for in a timely manner through a high-quality video.
