Today we’d like to introduce you to Keith McStoots.
Hi Keith, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a second generation roofer. My dad started roofing in the 70’s. I started working with my dad when I was 12 years old in 1980. I would work anytime there wasn’t school. I started off picking up trash from the ground and carrying shingles up the ladder for the installers. Within the next couple of years, my dad would teach me how to install a new shingle roof system. By the time I was 16 years old, I was able to perform a shingle reroof from start to finish. From 16 to 19 I worked a couple of jobs, I roofed and I worked for Winn Dixie full time. By the time I was 19, I was a Jr. Asst manager for Winn Dixie but roofing was always pulling at me. So, in 1987 I returned to roofing full time. In 1990 I tested and obtained by first roofing license at the age of 22. In 2006 I tested again to take the Florida State Certified exam. Throughout my career I have worked for myself and for other companies. During the 2009 recession, I started working for a large national roofing company. I started out as a commercial superintendent overseeing large jobs such as Orlando Magic’s home Amway Arena and Nemours Children’s Hospital in Lake Nona. During my 11 years with this company I held many positions, general superintendent, division manager, VP of Florida and eventually East Coast division Manager. In 2020, I resigned from this company and started my current company BKM Roofing Inc. This company is managed by my wife and myself.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being in the roofing business is never a smooth road. Our pricing is always at the whim of manufacturers as is insurance pricing for business policies. The down turn in 2008/2009 was a significant set back for us.
We’ve been impressed with BKM Roofing Inc, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
BKM Roofing Inc thrives on total honesty. We totally believe in the hands on approach. WE answer every call personally either on the phone or by text to let the caller know we see them. I will always give my honest evaluation of their roof. Do they need a new roof now or just a repair to get them by. We understand money is hard to come by these days.
Any big plans?
Our future plans are to expand into other states. We are currently opening a new office in Kingsland GA. We are partnering with an established company in South Carolina and we are licensed in North Carolina.
