Today we’d like to introduce you to Josef Hess.
Hi Josef, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always loved soccer and the competitiveness of the sport. The feeling of working hard every day to achieve your goals, the discipline needed, and the feeling of hearing “goal” when you put the ball in the back of the net. I’ve never been one to shy away from a challenge. All the lessons I’ve learned playing soccer throughout my high school, collegiate, and semi-pro careers have helped me in my current role as an attorney. In 2016, I decided to take a leap of faith and move to Florida to go to law school. In Florida, I had no family, no friends, and I didn’t know a single person. I only checked out my apartment after moving in. Three years later, after tremendous sacrifice, wins and losses, and with my parents’ never-ending love and support to help me reach my dreams, I passed the Bar Exam and was sworn into the Florida Bar as an attorney.
Would it have been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Of course, life always presents its challenges. The path I traveled to where I am today was long, uncertain, and even required changing the proverbial flat tire. But it is worth it when you have a passion for something and finds what you love. Most recently, my father’s passing, who was also my hero, mentor, guide, and best friend. But my father never really passed; he lives through me. I strive to fulfill all his hopes and dreams, of everything he once wanted, to carry on the legacy.
We’ve been impressed with Rissman, but for folks who might need to be more familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am an attorney for a law firm named Rissman, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. Rissman founded a brand-new office in Jacksonville, which Derek Bush is leading. I was selected as the first attorney to trailblaze north Florida along with Derek, and I am honored to work alongside him and the firm. We are rapidly expanding, and I am very excited about the growth of this office and firm. I concentrate my practice on civil litigation defense and personal injury, but I also have experience in family law, construction defects, and admiralty law.
