Hidden Gems: Meet Jatinder Bhan of Florida Homes Realty & Mortgage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jatinder Bhan.

Hi Jatinder, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Born in Kashmir, a beautiful mountain valley in the Himalayas, where I spent my early childhood with my parents, sister, and extended family. the first two decades of my life with my extended family that included my parents, grandparents, and my younger sister.

Growing up in Kashmir meant living near the most breathtaking landscapes, and learning how to hike, camp, ski, and embrace the beauty of nature in all its splendid glory. I always aspired to be a socially conscious entrepreneur.

I learned early on that working for collective upliftment while pursuing my individual ambitions was the recipe to success. I remember participating in fundraising at school along with my friends and batchmates for the poor and the needy. We collected clothes and other living supplies to help them with day-to-day living. These events not only helped others but had a resounding impact on me to pursue such activities during the course of my life.

Living in Kashmir taught me to recognize the value of closely-knit communities and the spirit of interdependence, family, and togetherness. For my early college, I moved to New Delhi India’s Capital city where I lived and was exposed to a vibrant tapestry of distinct languages, cultures, ethnicities, and nationalities – during my college days I learned the values of independence and freedom and the meanings of hard work and perseverance. For the uninitiated, Delhi can be a difficult city. To make it my own required tremendous willpower and fortitude. But even as the city tested my limits, it created the space for me to grow, mature, and discover my strengths.

After completing studying literature, I decided to pursue a career in business management, and thereafter, I decided to work for corporate India in Mumbai & New Delhi. I used my leadership skills as well as my commitments to community building, creative and out-of-box thinking to cultivate a wide-ranging customer base that included clients in the government, media houses, and the private sector. In the late 1990s, I got married to my close childhood friend, Daya, with whom I moved to Canada, which became our home for nearly a decade.

In Canada and now the US, I continued to use my cross-cultural networking skills and my vision for inclusive community building to pursue a range of community-development efforts — efforts that I cemented through my leadership of the Indo-US Chamber of Commerce. In my tenure as president of the organization, I successfully promoted local businesses while also using my international networks to promote global arts, films, and culture.

I enlisted the help of local businesses to bring nationally and internationally acclaimed writers, artists, and filmmakers to the city of Toronto and Jacksonville, Florida, and coordinated with local organizations to host widely attended public events. Under my leadership, the organization welcomed a Bollywood production team to Jacksonville, Florida. Also, helped the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce to win the bid to relocate an Australian bank to Florida- both these interventions helped earn substantial revenue for the city. With the help of the Jacksonville City and Public Library, we were able to host the renowned international Film Director Mira Nair to attend the Annual JAX READS! /NEA Big Read Community Event.

To me being in the US and pursuing real estate is not that different from what I learned about community building during my growing up years in Kashmir. My experiences building socially relevant programs for several organizations in the US and Canada and my commitments to bridging cross-cultural divisions shapes my current work as a real estate professional. I approach real estate as a part of my community building and outreach work. I bring to real estate my extensive networks of clients and business partners and my commitment to helping families and communities thrive.

I believe in offering my clients the highest quality customer care while helping them find their dream homes and build lifelong communities. With me, you get the promise of dedicated commitment, accountability, and a lifelong relationship of trust, reliability, and care. Rather than seeing it simply as a job or a career, real estate work is the expression of my deep-seated desire to make a difference in communities. I know homes are not only brick and mortar. My approach to real estate honors this fundamental human spirit.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My approach to tackling any personal or professional challenges is to understand the issue and use my creative abilities to find sustainable solutions that are pragmatic but also acknowledge conflicting points of view. I learned these delicate social skills in Kashmir and throughout my life experiences. which as some of you might know, is one of the world’s longest-running disputes. While I grew up in the midst of stunning beauty, it was also deeply strained because of decades of wars and conflict – to both survive such political upheavals and to live with social uncertainty teaches you some important skills.

I feel kids who are born and raised in conflict appreciate the value of peace and community building from a young age. They know that the stability of homes and communities cannot be taken for granted, and they find ways to maintain what they have and renew what they might have lost. I, along with my family, had to leave Kashmir at the heights of the conflict in the early 1990s. We lost our house that we could never return to. But more importantly, I also lost dense networks of friends and kin that were such an integral part of my life.

Kashmiri communities, those who remained and those of us who left, were divided and fragmented; the conflict did not spare anyone. I know this might sound a tad dramatic but given this context, real estate for me might be my way to do exactly what I lost growing up – create opportunities for people to build homes that provide a safe and vibrant space to grow, learn, and explore. In short, real estate gives me a solid opportunity to build and sustain communities.
