Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Luke.
Hi Elizabeth, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
The Jacksonville Baby Company is Northeast Florida’s only agency focusing on the health and wellness of families after they welcome their babies into the world! Elizabeth Luke, owner of The Jacksonville Baby Company started the business in 2013 while in the midst of raising her own children and working as a nanny.
As a busy working mom who experienced my own struggles after giving birth to our third baby, I saw that there is a huge need for in-home, hands-on support and encouragement as parents begin their lives with a new baby. I suffered from the sudden onset of postpartum psychosis, a rare, but a very real illness that can cause delusions or strange beliefs, hallucinations, decreased need for or inability to sleep, and paranoia or suspiciousness. The year before our last baby was born we moved further from our families and my mother and Mema passed away. These women were my heroes. Not only did they raise me to be the woman I am today, but they loved my babies like no other, took time out for them, and were also a huge part of my support system.
I faced many obstacles and setbacks in the year after our last was born and I can honestly say that I took notes! Sleep is one of the key components that affect our health and the majority of parents start life with a newborn already in a sleep deficit. The emotional rollercoaster parents are on throughout pregnancy and the year after birth is a wild ride. Fear of judgment often stops parents from reaching out for support! I knew that what happened to me was happening to other parents and there was absolutely something we, as a community, could do about it. I vowed to make a difference and that is how The Jacksonville Baby Company was born!
Most people do not know that there are professionals they can bring home with them! Postpartum doulas and overnight infant care specialists are there to help parents thrive during the next chapter. Our team supports parents from the day they come home from the hospital until they find their footing, have all the systems in place, and feel ready to do it “alone”. From one family to the next their goals and day-to-day life can look very different, but their basic needs remain the same. The JBC team helps parents feel safe, validates their feelings, and assures they gain confidence as they discover their own parenting style. We also help with healthy meals and snack prep, infant feeding (breast, bottle, chest, or combo feeding), routines/schedules, sibling adjustments, product and gear recommendations, and assistance with ordering, assembling, and organizing it all. Did we mention helping the whole family get more SLEEP?!
Elizabeth is committed to improving maternal-infant health by providing unparalleled support and education to families as a dual-certified perinatal, postnatal, and overnight infant support specialist, as well as a birth and parenting educator.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Professionally one of the biggest challenges I continue to face is educating our community and getting people to help spread the word that there is real help and support available through The Jacksonville Baby Company.
Personally, one of the biggest struggles has been work-life balance. Setting boundaries and business hours help, but when you get that call/text/email from a parent of a newborn looking for breast/bottle feeding help, sleep support, or general encouragement your heartstrings are pulled. You know you’re going to take that call because you can be the comfort and calm in the chaos for them at that moment and set them up with an excellent team to get them on track.
Everyone knows someone who either has a newborn or is expecting a new baby soon, be it a neighbor, co-worker, friend, or family member. One easy way you can help them while also helping us overcome our biggest challenge is by sharing The Jacksonville Baby Company with them.
As you know, we’re big fans of The Jacksonville Baby Company. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The Jacksonville Baby Company has a very clear mission, to improve maternal-infant wellness by providing unparalleled support and education to families in their homes.
We are the only agency strictly focusing on postpartum and overnight infant-care support to families throughout Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia. Our team is science-minded and takes a down-to-earth evidence-based approach to all things parent-baby. I have over 25 years of experience working with newborns and together our team has more than 50 years of experience working with newborns and toddlers in some capacity or another.
We specialize in overnight sleep support from birth to three months, infant feeding, and cesarean birth recovery.
We teach private newborn and postnatal care classes, provide daytime and overnight support, and offer gift certificates for those wanting to give the meaningful gift of support and sleep.
How do you define success?
I believe success is defined by a culmination of little things you do in life.
For example, doing your best every day and showing yourself grace when your best wasn’t what you envisioned it to be. I think we often focus on success as the big picture; earning six figures, buying a vacation home, and completely paying off our debt. Those things are amazing, but not a measurement of having lived a successful life. We don’t stop reaching for success when we achieve our goals, we keep going.
For me, with our first baby, success was taking a daily walk. With our second baby, it was getting a shower first thing in the morning. With our last baby, it was finishing at least one meal uninterrupted. I prioritized those things because I felt more successful overall when those things happened.
The majority of moms with a newborn, feel more successful in their daily lives when they get a minimum of 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep and a couple of short naps throughout the day. When they get 8 they feel like a million bucks!
