Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlai Pender.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a first-generation entrepreneur from a small country town who learned early that if I wanted a different life, I would have to build it myself.
My entrepreneurial journey actually started in the beauty industry. I owned a successful beauty business for several years, but after COVID changed that industry, I knew I needed to pivot. During that time, I had already been helping other business owners with business structure, credit, and funding, and I realized there was an even bigger opportunity in the tax industry.
I founded Tax Savant Tax Service with a simple mission: to educate people while helping them build wealth, not just prepare tax returns. What started as a small tax office has grown into a multi-location business, a service bureau, and a mentorship program where I help tax professionals build profitable, compliant businesses of their own.
Along the way, I’ve had the privilege of mentoring hundreds of entrepreneurs, creating systems that allow businesses to scale, and showing people that success is about much more than making money—it’s about creating freedom, legacy, and opportunities for the next generation.
Outside of business, I’m a wife, a mother, and someone who deeply values health, faith, and family.
Today, my mission is bigger than building businesses. It’s helping people think like CEOs, create generational wealth, and realize that where you start doesn’t determine where you’re capable of going. If my journey proves anything, it’s that with faith, discipline, and the willingness to adapt, you can build a life that once felt impossible.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not. Like most entrepreneurs, my journey has been full of pivots, setbacks, and moments where I questioned everything.
One of my biggest challenges was learning how to transition from being self-employed to becoming a true CEO. In the beginning, I wore every hat in the business. I thought working harder was the answer, but eventually I realized that growth requires systems, leadership, and trusting other people. That shift completely changed the trajectory of my business.
Personally, I’ve also experienced significant loss.
I lost both of my parents and my only sibling by the age of 26. Those experiences changed me in ways I can’t fully put into words. They taught me resilience, gave me a deeper appreciation for time, and became a constant reminder that building a meaningful life is just as important as building a successful business.
There were also seasons of uncertainty. Pivoting from the beauty industry into the tax industry wasn’t guaranteed to work. I had to start over in many ways, invest in myself, and bet on a vision that only I could see at the time.
Looking back, I’m grateful the road wasn’t smooth because every challenge forced me to become a better leader, make wiser decisions, and build businesses that can thrive without depending solely on me. Those lessons are now some of the most valuable things I get to pass on to the entrepreneurs I mentor.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At its core, my brand is about helping people build wealth through education, strategy, and strong business foundations.
While many people know us as a tax firm, we’re much more than that. Through Tax Savant Tax Service, we provide tax preparation, tax planning, bookkeeping, payroll, business formation, and business consulting. We believe taxes should be part of a bigger financial conversation, not just a once-a-year transaction.
I also mentor tax professionals across the country, helping them build compliant, profitable tax businesses through systems, operations, marketing, and leadership. My goal isn’t just to teach someone how to prepare a tax return—it’s to help them build a business that creates long-term freedom and generational wealth.
What sets us apart is our commitment to education. Whether someone is a tax client or a business owner, we want them to leave every interaction understanding more than they did when they walked in. We believe informed clients make better financial decisions, and informed entrepreneurs build stronger businesses.
One thing I’m especially proud of is that we’ve built a brand people trust. Our clients know we prioritize integrity, transparency, and doing things the right way—even when it’s not the easiest way. That same philosophy carries over into everything we do, from mentoring entrepreneurs to serving our community.
As our company continues to grow, my vision remains the same: to help more families create financial stability, help more entrepreneurs become confident CEOs, and leave a legacy that’s measured not only by business success, but by the lives we’ve impacted along the way.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was a very curious kid with a big personality. I was outgoing, talked way too much (my teachers would definitely agree!), and I was always the one asking questions or speaking my mind. I’ve always been a little headstrong and never really liked following the crowd. If everyone was going one way, I was usually interested in figuring out if there was another path.
I also loved learning. I joined as many clubs and activities as I could because I genuinely wanted to experience everything. Reading was one of my favorite hobbies. I even turned my bedroom closet into a little library because I wanted more space for books than clothes. Believe it or not, I even read the dictionary for fun just to learn new words.
I think I’ve always balanced being social with enjoying my own company. I loved being around people, but I also loved disappearing into my room with a good book. I was spontaneous, adventurous, and always looking for something new to learn or try.
Looking back, it’s funny how those same qualities still define me today. My curiosity became a passion for education, my outgoing personality led me to mentoring and public speaking, and that headstrong nature gave me the confidence to build businesses on my own terms. I don’t think I’ve changed all that much, I just found a purpose for the traits I had all along.
