Today we’d like to introduce you to Pamela Davis.
Hi Pamela, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
FAITH, FAMILY, EDUCATION
I grew up in rural Northwest Florida in the 70s; in a household with both my college educated parents in what back then was considered a middle class family. They instilled in me the belief in God, importance of family and the value of an education. Every Sunday, you’d find me in church; singing in the choir or playing the piano. My family home sat less than a mile from my maternal grandparents. They were also very instrumental in reinforcing their beliefs surrounding the impact of an education.
After graduating from high school, I went to college and pursued my undergraduate and graduate degrees at Florida A&M University. Coming from a small rural community, Tallahassee was just the right size of an upgrade for me to spread my wings. I became involved in a new church community and started my teaching career. As a math teacher, I was committed to making sure my students felt comfortable learning what most believed was an intimidating topic. After about 10 years of teaching, I earned my Doctor of Education degree in Educational Leadership. Even after getting this degree, I committed to remain a teacher at heart so that I’d never lose that perspective.
The front half of my career was spent absorbing experiences that would later inform the latter half of my career.
For the first half – I taught high school mathematics and freshman math courses. During the second half of my career, I became deeply engrossed in leadership – starting as an assistant principal. I became the first principal of an inaugural program for students who were over age for their academic grade level. This opportunity aligned with my passion to support struggling students as families. From this role, I continued working in programming that was specific to supporting students in special populations – students in foster care, unsheltered youth, students who were incarcerated, and other alternative programs.
Around 2018, I became frustrated with my growth or the lack thereof. Not feeling or believing there was an opportunity for upward mobility in my current organization, I set out to reinvent myself. I wanted to put to use the skills and talents I had acquired over the years. This is how Growth Matters, LLC was birthed.
I created my company to address problems that I had been extinguishing through my roles in my 9 to 5. Leadership, communication, and personal growth were the key content areas. Through my work, I found that most problems were due to lack of leadership capacity, poor communication, and static growth. This move turned into an opportunity to reinvent myself. I created a growth framework comprised of 5 pillars: Awareness, Assessment, Accountability, Action, and Affirmation. My premier system for spark growth and moving my clients from where they are to where they want to be.
Presently, I’m a full-time executive coach supporting women with gain clarity about who they are without leaving their 9 to 5. I also work with organizations to build leadership capacity, enhance effective communication systems, and drive continuous growth. I do this through coaching, workshops, assessment tools (such as DISC and Lead 360) and keynotes.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’ve had my share of challenges. I’ve also learned how to meet adversity with determination. A couple of defining moments:
First, after I acquired my doctorate degree, I assumed things would get easier. Or at a minimal more opportunities would open. I applied to programs to help me access leadership opportunities and was rejected multiple times before finally being admitted.
Another struggle happened when I was re-assigned from a role in what felt like a stripping of title and power.
What looked and felt like a setback was the beginning of my transformation and reinvention of myself. In this moment, I was able to drill down and discover what I was truly good at. Without this struggle, I might still be limiting myself in a role that was no longer serving me well.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I started my company as a way of getting to do what I do best. My sweet spot is developing people. As an executive coach, I pride myself in my ability to listen, assess, and diagnose through appropriate questioning to support my clients’ access to insights about themselves.
I serve women who are mid-career professionals; in the age range of 35-60. They’re educated, experienced, polished but not gaining the visibility or traction they seek in the workplace. I also work with organizations like school districts, higher ed, non-profits, government agencies, and other organizations who seek my coaching, training, and assessment services. I offer 1:1 and group coaching – organizations hire me on retainer to provide coaching for their employees who need developing as well as those on an accelerator track. Secondly, I offer in-person and virtual training sessions to develop talent and drive continuous growth amongst teams. Popular topics include: leadership development, emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, DISC workshop and others.
Brand wise, I’m most proud of my book – Growth Matters 2.0 (check out the link on my website – http://www.growthmattersx.com). My book aligns to my learning system – the 5 pillars. It’s through this system that I was able to reinvent myself and I teach other how to do it as well, regardless of their industry.
