Today we’d like to introduce you to Myah Freeman.
Hi Myah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
My name is Myah Freeman and I was born and raised in Duval County (Jacksonville, Florida).
I grew up in a single-parent household with my mother, Kristen Gant. I’ve always been artistically inclined but as I grew older, it stuck with me unlike many of my peers, letting me know that this was more than just a hobby. In my freshman year of high school, I established my creative business, “MyahnArt,” providing my supporters with portrait illustrations, custom hats, and paintings.
This eventually grew into murals, vending, graphic design, gallery exhibitions, large paintings, custom skates and merch, hand-painted jewelry, and prints. I’ve always noticed the importance of putting myself out there, so I am forward and proud about what I do. Maintaining this type of attitude has afforded me many opportunities.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Establishing myself as an artist hasn’t always been the easiest especially when it came to establishing respect.
I began doing free work and eventually I realized my worth, so I began charging with very pocket-friendly prices. When you begin charging for work, of course, this is something the public may not receive well but ultimately, those who respect you will follow suit. That’s how you weed through them. This practice ultimately saved me time and energy.
In addition, I’ve had some losses. I haven’t been successful at securing every single opportunity that came my way. Nevertheless, I push forward toward more. Lastly, establishing my style and who I am as an artist has been an extremely long process and is forever underway. Early on, I never really felt like I made art for myself and about things I cared about. I was always a service to someone else.
It wasn’t until my junior year of college that I tapped into self-invested creations. We evolve.
As you know, we’re big fans of MyahnArt, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
As a college graduation gift, my mother presented me with my Articles of Organization, shifting my business to “MyahnArt, LLC.” This was a very special moment for me. My mom has always been supportive of my artistic talents and never projected the idea of, “it wouldn’t pay the bills.” She saw my gift.
Not only my mother but much of my family and people all over the world find spiritual meaning in animals. Hence my use of the Cardinal bird. The bird represents the spirit of a loved one. My father passed when I was three, so for me, when I see a Cardinal, it is my father visiting me. Anyone can apply this meaning to their life. Think of someone who meant a lot to you and keep your eyes open for their visit.
As an artist, I specialize in painting and drawing but I am also able to do digital design as well. To date, some of my proudest achievements include the: 1) FSU CARE Mural, 2) FSU DeGraff Tunnel Murals, 3) Soul of Southside Tallahassee Festival Paintings, 4) teaching art classes in Senegal, 5) being named FSU’s 2020 Humanitarian of the Year, 6) painting a gallery wall in B&Suns Art Gallery, 7) showing in the LeMoyne Arts Gallery twice, and the list goes on. Ultimately, I am proud of am diversity. I am continually trying to market my business so, often you will catch me at vending opportunities.
I want people to know that I offer many different creative services which they can inquire about at any time. Some of these include paintings and drawings of loved ones, custom shoes and skates, custom hats and bags, murals, logos, and more. I am on all major social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter where you can find me @MyahnArt or email me at [email protected].
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
I don’t have a specific app or podcast that helps me but, books? I use my planner like my life depends on it. There is not a day or an hour where I do not use it. I have a one-track mind with a million things to do, so it is pertinent that I don’t try and keep it all inside.
