Hi Kesta , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
If I had to describe my journey in one word, it would be intentional.
My journey into tax preparation began in 2014 while I was living in Massachusetts. After completing formal training in federal tax law and ethics, I stepped into my first tax season with Jackson Hewitt. What started as an opportunity quickly became a foundation.
Before Monroe Tax Connect ever existed, I found myself in a season of reflection. I had education, certifications, and experience, but I kept asking myself whether I was building something that truly aligned with the life I wanted. I didn’t want to just work. I wanted ownership. I wanted flexibility. I wanted legacy.
For a long time, I prayed about working for myself, not out of frustration, but out of vision. I felt called to create something rooted in service, integrity, and impact. I didn’t have every detail mapped out, but I knew I was being prepared.
In 2016, I made a bold decision to leave Massachusetts and move to the South. I knew I needed a change. The cost of living had become overwhelming, and I felt stuck in a cycle of working hard without building forward momentum. I wanted stability. I wanted growth. I wanted control over my future.
Growing up, I watched both of my parents work tirelessly in different households just to make ends meet. Their work ethic shaped me, but it also taught me the importance of building a life with intention. I didn’t want a job to control every aspect of my time. I wanted freedom, balance, and the ability to truly enjoy life and family.
There was a season early in my motherhood when I faced housing instability while pregnant with my first daughter. It was one of the most humbling and defining periods of my life. That experience alone reshaped my understanding of resilience and reinforced my commitment to creating stability not just for myself, but for my children. It deepened my determination to build something sustainable and lasting.
After relocating, I focused on strengthening my foundation personally and professionally.
So when Monroe Tax Connect officially launched in 2020, it wasn’t random, and it wasn’t rushed. It was the result of years of discipline, growth, and quiet preparation. The work ethic was already there. The skill set was already there. What I needed was the courage to fully step into it.
Building this business has stretched me in ways I never expected. Entrepreneurship tests your confidence, your patience, and your consistency, but it also reveals your strength. My faith kept me grounded on the hard days and reminded me why I started in the first place.
Today, what drives me isn’t just preparing tax returns. It’s educating people so they feel empowered instead of overwhelmed. It’s helping families keep more of what they’ve worked for. It’s serving my community with excellence and honesty.
Monroe Tax Connect is more than a service; it’s an extension of my commitment to do meaningful work that creates real impact. This journey has been about growth, obedience to purpose, and choosing to build rather than settle.
And I’m still building.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but I’ve learned that growth rarely is.
One of the biggest challenges has been navigating entrepreneurship while continuing to grow personally. When you build something from the ground up, there’s no manual. You’re responsible for the vision, the operations, the service, and the outcomes. That level of accountability stretches you.
Another challenge has been balancing motherhood with business ownership. Being present for my children while building a company requires intention and discipline. There have been late nights, early mornings, and moments where I questioned whether I was doing enough in either role.
Early in my journey, I also faced seasons of uncertainty and rebuilding. Those moments forced me to develop resilience, patience, and faith in ways I couldn’t have learned otherwise. Instead of breaking me, they sharpened my focus and clarified my “why.”
Entrepreneurship has taught me confidence not in knowing everything, but in trusting my ability to figure things out. Every obstacle became a lesson. Every setback strengthened my foundation.
Looking back, I wouldn’t trade the challenges. They shaped the leader I am today.
