Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Sandell.
Hi Jenny, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The practice started in Clay County in 2014. There was such a demand for services for children and teens, it only made sense to go over the bridge. So many times people would say ‘we have had such a hard time finding someone’ There are so many barriers to mental health services for youth, we make it our mission to be the solution.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The largest challenge is the insurance companies. There are many barriers in the use of insurance. There are restrictions on how long a session can be, how many, and how often. There are so many variations in patient costs and reimbursement, it’s very unpredictable. There is no other industry that cannot control its fees for services provided. The other challenge is schedules. No one likes to miss work or school for appointments, but the reality is, we could be open all weekend and every evening and we would still run out of those times. We do everything we can to not disrupt the other activities of daily life, but if mental health is not stable, the other activities will also decline.
