Exploring Life & Business with Heather West of Designs By Heather

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather West

Hi Heather , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I earned my Associates in Interior Design about 20 years ago and spent many years specializing in kitchen and bath design. I took some time off from the field while raising my two kids but now that they are in high school and college, I decided to go back to school and earn my bachelors in interior design. I freshened up my skills and learned many new skills. I graduated in May 2023 and opened my own business, Designs by Heather in July of 2023.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
What led me back to school was subbing long term in the Interior Design Academy at a local high school. I wanted the job full time as their permanent teacher, but because I did not hold a Bachelors degree, I was turned down for the position even with years of experience. I realized while I was teaching about design, that I missed it and decided that a degree would not hold me back again. That was struggle number one. Struggle two is ramping up a business is hard work. I know all about design, but they don’t teach about owning your own business in the program. It’s hard learning all of the back end pieces and building your client base.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Designs By Heather?
I am an Interior Design business that specializes in residential, and virtual short term vacation rental design. I hold certifications in color selection for paint and also in virtual design. I love telling a story through design. In a residence, it’s what connects a family to their home and makes it unique to them. It’s adding the special touches and digging deep into what they love. In a vacation rental, it’s the theming and branding that sets their rental apart from others. It builds excitement, memories and a unique stay to the people who stay there and remember it for years to come.

I am a really good listener and remember details. I then use those elements to design something really special.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I believe every person you work for or with will add a piece to your story and puzzle. Some will add great advice and some will add what not to do. It’s important to have those pieces and learning moments to build your path. Getting yourself out there and meeting people will round you in many ways, but you have to be open to those moments.
