Exploring Life & Business with Dr. Jana Magarian of Pelvic Performance

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Jana Magarian.

Dr Jana Magarian

Hi, Dr. Jana. We’re thrilled to have a chance to hear your story today. Before we get into specifics, please briefly describe how you got to where you are today.
While getting my doctorate, I learned that pelvic floor physical therapy was a specialty and one I was interested in because women’s health is an underserved area of medicine. After PT school, I decided to complete a residency to learn about women’s health and the pelvic floor in a way that would make me an evidence-based clinician. After residency, I became a board-certified Women’s Clinical Specialist in physical therapy. Since then, I have loved educating women, men, and children on their pelvic floor muscles. I have grown my practice, explicitly treating women during their pregnancies, postpartum, and in their menopause periods. I launched Pelvic Performance, my pelvic floor physical therapy private practice, in 2021 to be able to treat new moms in Jacksonville in their homes early on postpartum when it is difficult to leave the house consistently for appointments.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The year I completed my residency was the most challenging year of my life because I worked and treated patients 45 hours a week and then spent every weekend in class. I learned about the importance of mental health that year. Seeing a therapist is what allowed me to complete my residency. When I first started my practice, getting the word out was hard. I have found that most of my patients find me through word of mouth, and I am forever grateful to my past patients who are spreading the word. Unfortunately, I do not receive referrals from OBGYNs, but I hope this will change when more patients speak up and demand postpartum care and when more providers like me can connect with OBGYNs.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a board-certified Women’s Clinical Specialist in physical therapy. This means that I am a specialist when it comes to treating pelvic floor muscle dysfunctions, pregnant patients, patients who are postpartum, patients who are going through or have gone through menopause, patients who have had prostate or GYN cancers, and even children. Pelvic floor muscle dysfunctions can present as urinary incontinence or leakage, pelvic pain, pain with intimacy, constipation, hip pain, low back pain, diastasis rectus abdominus (abdominal muscle separation), and so much more. There are few board-certified pelvic floor specialists in Jacksonville, so I am honored to have that certification. I am also residency-trained, which is even rarer. I am proud to be able to treat women in their homes when they are early on postpartum, as it can be tough getting yourself, let alone a new baby, to a clinic weekly for PT appointments.

What matters most to you?
I want women to be heard, and I don’t want their symptoms being shrugged off by other providers as “normal” just because they have had a baby or are aging. For so long, women have been marginalized by the medical community. I want every woman to know that their pain from endometriosis, their discomfort after having a baby, or the changes they have noticed after menopause are real and that there is something non-invasive that we can do about it!
