Today we’d like to introduce you to Cynthia Meadows.
Hi Cynthia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started doing hair at the age of 14 years old in my mother’s kitchen as I quickly learned my true passion was doing hair. My mother’s dream was to become a hairstylist but she never did, as I was a seed in her womb she prayed over me every day that I would live her dream.
I remember her praying over my hands every morning that my gift will make room for me, I believe that this was a true testament of where it all started. Hair was all I knew as this became my hustle through school to fund my college tuition to pursue my dream of being an attorney. When I graduated high school in 2005, I went to college part-time and did hair full-time in the salon. I quickly learned that I had to give up one of my loves at the time. I dropped out of school and pursued my career full-time and never looked back.
A’bliss Studios was founded eight years ago out of a need to create a professional upscale setting in the Jacksonville, Florida area. As a hairstylist, I wanted to set the bar high and fuel my passion by being the best in my industry. I’ve invested over 50K in personal development, advanced training, and public relations firm to become who I am today.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Becoming a salon owner was not a smooth road, this was simply a spiritual calling that God placed me in.
My personal challenge was struggling with my personal career while building other stylists’ personal careers with having a large clientele. At the time, I was a new mom and a new salon owner trying to balance them both. It created long hours which caused me to miss a lot of milestones with my daughter.
Being a business owner takes a true relationship with God to be able to become successful, although I don’t regret anything or the challenges I faced, it made me who I am today.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk-taking?
Anything that you do in life that you love you’re taking a risk. Risk is a necessary leap of faith of something you cannot see but you trust, you may think of risks as a bad thing but I look at it from many perspectives. When COVID-19 first hit, all salons in Florida shut down, no one saw this coming and it impacted the whole world.
For many service-based businesses, we had to learn how to survive and take a risk on how to cope and balance this unforeseen journey. This caused me to go back to the drawing board and rebuild and pivot a plan. I had to create systems that will allow my money to work for me without me actually putting in the work.
This was a major risk for my company because all I could see was Abliss never being able to open again, no service to my clients, and my staff and me without pay. Because of COVID-19, these last two years have been the best two years for the salon financially. So my advice to anyone is faith without works is dead sometimes you have to go back and rewrite the vision and take the risk.
