Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Legg.
Hi Alexis, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have been a stay at home mom since my husband and I began growing our family. We now have 4 daughters (YES, ALL
GIRLS) ages 8 years old, 4 years old, 2 years old and 6 months old. In our area and most surrounding areas, there are not many children’s specific clothing stores that are not consignment stores or big retail stores like Walmart, Carters etc and being a fan of the boutique style clothing for my own children I always had to buy them clothes online. So, now that we have 4 girls I felt like children’s clothing was something I knew quite a bit about at this point and with the lack of children’s specific boutiques in our area, at 7 months pregnant with my youngest daughter I decided to open my own children’s boutique!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not. Since I was 7 months pregnant when I first opened my boutique I tried selling exclusively online. Unfortunately, with all the internet algorithms and all the extra “verifications” most social media pages want you to pay them monthly to have in order to reach customers or even run online ads, it made it just about impossible for anyone on most social media sites to see my content to know that my business even existed. Therefore, my business went an entire 7 months with only THREE sales that came from family members. I even paid for several ads during that time which majority of the time got taken down due to poor AI bot approval systems most social media sites have. Once I finally gave birth to my youngest daughter and healed from my c-section I pivoted from being strictly online and began traveling around the North FL and South GA areas to different markets and events and set up tent booths to sell my items and begin gaining exposure.
I also just want to give a quick shout out to my husband and my amazing in-laws for helping me start up my boutique because without them none of this would have been possible!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a children’s boutique that sells girls AND boys infant and children’s boutique clothing, smocks and handmade bows and head wraps.
While we specialize in girls clothing and accessories we have also realized there is a lack of clothing stores and boutiques that sell cute boy items so we do carry boys boutique clothing and smocks as well!
Being a girl mom, my girls never leave the house without a bow! So, while I started my boutique selling only clothing I expanded into making bows and head wraps by hand which is what we became most popular on social media for! The love for my hand-crafted bows and head wraps grew so quickly that I now have them in 2 different retail storefront locations in both Florida AND Georgia!
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
While my business is definitely still in the growing stage, having persistence, resilience and being able to adapt to changing circumstances has definitely helped me get my business to where it currently is. I think doing something you are passionate about definitely plays a key role in success as well because you are more likely to work harder and keep pushing through the tough times of owning a business when you love what you do. And for me personally, it is an indescribable feeling watching a little girls face light up at the sight of my handmade bows and hearing all the positive feedback and love from everyone that has seen us at markets and events makes me feel like I’m on the right path!
