Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Turner
Hi Rebecca, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After being customers and raving fans of The Poppin Box for several years, our family had the opportunity to buy the shop when the founders were ready to retire and move to GA. They handpicked us to keep the sweet nostalgic feel alive and well.
After owning the shop for three years now, we have expanded into the unit next door, doubling our size. We have also expanded to become a preferred vender for The University of Alabama. We continue to grow and look forward to being a recognized household name.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Taking over The Poppin Box was definitely a learning curve, especially taking over in December- the busiest month of the year. Learning how to make all the yummy popcorn, fudge, chocolate turtles, dipped pretzels, and more took longer than I expected There were a lot of long hours and I had to learn how to walk away and go home even when things weren’t finished, realizing things will never be finished if business is to continue to grow.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are a gourmet popcorn, soda, and retro candy shop. We hand-make over 65 flavors of gourmet popcorn, and also make homemade fudge, roasted nuts, turtles, dipped pretzels, and other sweet treats. In addition to the goodies, we also provide a variety of community events, such as summertime storytime programs, Back-to-School adventure nights, Spring Flings, Jingle Jamboree with Santa every December, birthday parties, and more. We also provide gift services, marketing bags- where businesses provide their logo and we can print and apply to a bag of popcorn and match the popcorn to their brand colors. We also provide fundraising in the community for schools, churches, teams, and other organizations. We are proud to have been named in the top five of the St. John’s County School business partners for 2024. Our tag line sums up the heart of our business- The Poppin Box- Where Families Make Memories and Businesses Get Remembered.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Caring matters. Your customers know when you care about them. When you care more about the person over the sale, you will be successful.
