Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Day.
Hi Rebecca, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
As a journalist and songwriter, my job really comes down to storytelling. I began my career as a musician and performed and toured regularly for quite awhile—more than a decade. But after all that time performing hours on end, I had to restructure in order to allow my body (and mind) to keep creating. So I pulled out my Creative Writing degree and began writing for various publications covering arts and culture-related topics. Writing stories and songs has always been my passion so I’m very fortunate I get to do it everyday as a career.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but that’s where the inspiration comes from. I have a chronic pain condition, temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), which affects the jaw. It makes it hard to sing and is a constant pain in my life but at some point you make it up in your mind to keep going. Songwriting has been especially helpful, because it allows me an emotional release. As I deal with the condition more and more, it has opened the door to my most honest and personal songwriting and storytelling yet.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Music journalism is a big part of my creative life. And as a songwriter and performer with a background in country music, many of my articles deal with that genre and other roots-oriented genres like Americana and gospel. I’m ever-curious though, so I really enjoy spreading my wings and writing about a multitude of topics. I’ve enjoyed covering everything from poetry and entrepreneurship to music and sports. I also run my own newsletter, Classically Cultured, on Substack, diving into the world of arts and philosophy. I’m most proud of the fact that I get to wake up everyday and be in charge of my time. I always knew from a young age I’d like to be my own boss.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I’m both a hopeless introvert and a workaholic, which is why interviews I conduct for stories are so wonderful. I get to meet all kinds of people and it breaks me out of my shell a bit. If I could hold happy hour in my office, I would.
I also have a forthcoming book debuting in Winter 2026, “Pruning Season.” The collection will feature original poetry and poetic prose. This will be my second published book. My debut novel, “Derelict,” released in 2019.
