Today we’d like to introduce you to R Scott Hartsfield.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was last of 6 kids. When we were all young, as a family we would watch the news and TV shows together. My role was to either rub backs, feet, legs or whatever hurt.
Unbeknownst to me, this training prepared me to be a Licensed Massage Therapist, now 30+ years.
I have done this work 7 days a week for over 20+ years.
My client list includes infants to those in their 80’s. My specialty is more sports massage and East approach to health and healing. Thai on the table is what I enjoy doing every day.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have been many learning opportunities. I was not sure in the beginning why kind of therapist I wanted to be and certainly did not realize I would want to provide services to a particular market.
Some of the struggles included not having a defined business plan that would help me to identify the right clients and “farm area” so I am not driving excessive miles.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have been so fortunate to have business knowledge from my 44 years at Florida Blue. And, in the massage profession, I was able to serve as Legislative chair for the state and chair the national Ethics and Standards for the NCBTMB. Locally, I was able to participate with FSMTA and AMTA with several volunteer positions that helped me to grow, and helped them to grow, too.
At Florida Blue, I did co-chair our Corporate Mentoring Program that helped me to help others to grow.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Oh, great question. For both roles (Blue and massage), I had to realize that everything is not black and white – and there is no way I can know or understand what others are going through – and I need to really listen with my ears, head, heart and use my knowledge before I respond or react.
The lesson, as my father taught me, you have 2 ears so you can listen twice as much as you talk. So true !!
