Daily Inspiration: Meet Marie Morton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marie Morton.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Literary Indulgence of Jacksonville was founded with a passion for storytelling and a mission to celebrate and support the literary community. Recognizing the need for a platform where book lovers could connect, whether they write, read, or work with books, I launched this initiative to highlight local talent, foster meaningful discussions, and inspire a love for literature. What began as a vision to bring book enthusiasts together grew into an annual festival and online platform, creating opportunities for authors to showcase their work, engage with readers, and build lasting connections. Through events, workshops, writing classes, and literary-based retreats, as well as community partnerships, Literary Indulgence of Jacksonville strives to uplift Jacksonville’s vibrant literary scene while promoting literacy, the love of books, and creative expression for all in the community.

Literary Indulgence of Jacksonville is excited to announce two upcoming events: the 2nd Annual Literary Indulgence Book Festival and the Author & Reader Mixer, both taking place at the historic Friday Musicale in Riverside on Saturday, June 28, 2025. The festival will run from 10 AM–4 PM, with the mixer capping off the day from 5 PM–8 PM.

The festival is a true book lover’s celebration, showcasing multi-genre authors to meet the varied interests of readers. Highlights include award-winning author Lana McAra, who will present Your Deepest, Darkest Secrets Are the Key to Your Next Best-Seller, along with a series of engaging workshops and presentations. Guests can also enjoy live music from Kool Vibes Band, vendor shopping in the courtyard, and activities for all ages—including children’s storytelling sessions with Elaine Charles and fun arts and crafts. Plus, don’t miss the Kindle Paperwhite raffle and other exciting giveaways throughout the day!

The Author & Reader Mixer invites attendees to join the fun by dressing as their favorite book character for a chance to win a prize.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey hasn’t always been smooth. I faced the challenges of establishing a business, learning all the pieces it takes to become an entrepreneur, building a strong infrastructure, and navigating the complexities of changing website platforms. Adapting to new promotional strategies—balancing social media, AI tools, and traditional advertising—has been a learning curve, as well as finding sources of funding. One of the hardest lessons was realizing that not everyone who starts the journey with you will stay the course. Through it all, I’ve learned that being able to adapt and learn quickly is critical to keeping the momentum moving forward toward success.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Somewhere between the pages of the books I devoured as a young girl, a lifelong passion was born. I can still remember the excitement when my mother would bring home a new book series from the bookstore, or the countless summer hours I spent roaming library shelves, searching for hidden literary treasures. Books became my sanctuary—and eventually, my calling.

Today, I bring more than 20 years of professional experience in corporate communications, nonprofit fundraising, event coordination, and editorial services, paired with a degree in communications and an MBA. But what truly lights me up is my journey as an author and a champion for the literary community. In the past two years, I published two short stories and will release my first novella, A Twist of Fate at the Matchmaker’s Inn, in May 2025. I’m also hard at work on my debut novel—a dream that’s been years in the making.

One of my proudest achievements is founding Literary Indulgence of Jacksonville, now in its second year, and launching the online platform to connect book lovers. Through events like writing workshops, author and reader retreats, indie bookstore spotlights, and our annual book festival, my mission is to celebrate authors, amplify their voices, and keep the next generation excited about the power of books.

What sets me apart is simple: I believe books are not just entertainment—they are survival, hope, escape, and community. Supporting authors and keeping the love for reading alive isn’t just my passion; it’s my purpose.

What makes you happy?
What makes me happy is helping others and connecting with like-minded individuals who share a passion for learning, growth, and making a positive impact. I find deep joy in working to bring light into the community—doing what I can to counterbalance the stress and darkness that sometimes weigh heavily in the world around us. Whether through volunteering, making donations, or simply lending a listening ear, I believe small acts of kindness make a big difference. Another profound source of happiness and pride is watching my sons grow into adulthood, becoming good people who carry strong values and compassion into their own lives. Their journeys continually remind me of what truly matters. And of course, reading a good book and writing bring joy.
