Daily Inspiration: Meet Kathy Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy Brown.

Hi Kathy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
Becoming an empty nester at age 40 had me questioning what would I do next.

I felt I had lost purpose in my life and decided I needed a hobby. With no real thought, experience or knowledge, I decided to start a midlife travel and lifestyle blog. I haphazardly picked the website name of Finding Kathy Brown and off I went.

Honestly, I never really thought anyone would read my website, but I just kept writing. Writing about everything and anything I fancied with no real niche. The surprising thing that happened is that the blog kept growing.

Moving forward to turning 50, I started to get inside my own head about aging. Over time, I began sharing aging experiences both on Finding Kathy Brown and throughout social media channels, like Instagram, Facebook, and more recently TikTok.

Turns out that a lot of middle-aged women like myself were discussing the same concerns. It was with these women I began to build connections and friendships. My following began to grow and the next thing you know I’m a successful blogger and influencer. Who would have thought it?

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to building a successful blog was not easy. Thankfully, I had a lot of help, mainly from my daughter. I remember countless calls to her as my website crashed around me. It was actually at the suggestion of my daughter that I start an Instagram feed. As it would happen, social media really helped me grow.

The main obstacle that I faced really was my own insecurities. I’ve talked openly about the imposter syndrome that has plagued me from the onset of my online journeys. I also needed to come out of my comfort zone by making new connections.

Now many years into blogging and social media influence the continuing problems are how to grow this personal business and still work a traditional 9 to 5 job. After all the bills need to be paid.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Findingkathybrown.com works to highlight amazing travel destinations and things to do with the older person in mind. I like to say, we have a lot of fun traveling, but bedtime is still 9 pm.

Besides travel Finding Kathy Brown works to share life stories about me, the average woman of age. At 52, I feel the need to share stories with other women to both inspire and be inspired. I’m most proud of how far I’ve come since my early writing. Everything from grammar, sentence structure, ideas, and being able to hit the publish button without fear.

What sets me apart is my age. At 52, look at most travel and lifestyle writers. These are typically gorgeous 20-30 somethings lying in bikinis at the beach. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but my strength is that I can speak to women like myself. My focus is on the experiences and less about myself or appearance.

There was a time I thought my age, size, or appearance would hinder me, but it turns out to have been my best asset.

What do you think about happiness?
The thing that brings me the most joy in life, is new experiences with my partner in crime husband, Steve. Reading my website you get to know Steve quite well and he’s always by my side.

Happiness is also always found in the faces of my grandchildren. I am lucky enough to be the proud Nonni of two amazing little people named Vinny & Gabby.
