Daily Inspiration: Meet Julia Godwin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Godwin.

Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us how you got started?
I grew up constantly having my mom take photos of every event in our lives. Even now, she always has her phone out snapping pics. I never thought that would have an impact on my life until now. I remember I would bring disposable cameras with me to class trips at a young age and loved seeing the photos after they were developed. It was so cool to capture a fleeting moment in time and have the memories reemerge seeing the photos again. Years later, I attended FAU, decided to pick up a minor in photography just for fun, and worked as a portrait photographer in South Florida. I fell in love with the art form and thought about pursuing it further once moving back home (Jacksonville). Long story short, photography has always been a hobby of mine, and I am truly blessed to be able to make it a career. It has been a slow burn but an incredible one at that!

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey has not always been easy, nor is it now. I constantly struggle with being my boss and pushing myself to do more for the business. It is much easier working for someone else but not nearly as fulfilling.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a photographer specializing in branding/content photography for small businesses, including fashion and product photography. I am known for styling clients and attention to detail. I was taught to look at every detail before pressing the shutter. If you do it right, you only need a handful of shots. I pride myself on allowing my clients, models, whomever it may be, to feel like themselves, comfortable, and confident in any situation.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting?
My best advice is to do it! Ask your friends and family to photograph them, practice, practice, practice! Seriously, bring your camera with you everywhere.
