Daily Inspiration: Meet Gloria Staats

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gloria Staats

Hi Gloria, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been drawn to shaping my surroundings. Growing up in Puerto Rico, I loved rearranging my room, painting walls, and making spaces feel just right. That passion led me to study psychology, first earning a Bachelor’s degree at the University of Puerto Rico, then a Master’s in Florida.

My studies deepened my understanding of how environments affect emotions and behavior. But life had other lessons in store. I married a Naval Aviator, and our journey took us across the world—California, Japan, Hawaii, and more. With every move, I had to turn temporary spaces into comfortable homes for our growing family. That experience reinforced my belief that good design isn’t just about looks—it’s about function, comfort, and well-being.

When we settled in North Florida, I decided to turn that knowledge into a business. Peace of Mind Design helps professionals and vacation rental owners create spaces that feel welcoming and work for their needs. My background in psychology shapes how I approach design—blending aesthetics with practicality, making spaces feel good to be in, and helping clients maximize their investment.

Now, I get to do what I love every day—creating spaces that bring comfort, ease, and, of course, a little peace of mind.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but that’s what makes the journey interesting. Moving every few years as a military family meant constantly starting over—new homes, new communities, and always being far from family. It was tough, especially with young kids, but it also made us adaptable. Every move came with its challenges, but it also gave us a sense of adventure and resilience.

Professionally, shifting from psychology to interior design wasn’t a straight path either. I had to prove that design isn’t just about making things look nice—it’s about creating spaces that feel good, function well, and improve daily life. Building a business in an industry full of talented designers was intimidating, but my unique perspective helped me carve out my place.

Like any business, there have been ups and downs—learning curves, logistical hurdles, and the occasional “why did I take this on?” moment. But every challenge has reinforced my belief that good design is about more than decor. It’s about creating spaces that support and enhance life, no matter where that life takes you.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I help busy professionals and vacation rental owners create beautiful, functional spaces that feel like home. My company, Peace of Mind Design, specializes in high-end interior design with a focus on vacation rentals and luxury homes. I blend aesthetics with practicality—every space should not only look great but also serve the people living in it.

What sets me apart is my background in psychology. I don’t just design for looks; I design for how a space feels and how it impacts daily life. I consider how colors, layouts, and materials influence mood, productivity, and relaxation. This approach is especially valuable for vacation rentals, where guest experience is key to strong reviews and repeat bookings.

I’m most proud of the trust my clients place in me. Many of them are busy professionals who need a seamless, stress-free process. They rely on me to handle everything—from vision to execution—so they can focus on their lives while I create a space they’ll love. Seeing their reaction when they step into a finished space is the most rewarding part of my work.

At the end of the day, my goal is simple: to create spaces that bring comfort, function, and, of course, a little peace of mind.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories is spending summers with my cousins in the countryside. Summer camp for us wasn’t about cabins and schedules—it was about being dropped off at Grandma’s house in the morning, where she always had breakfast ready. Once we ate, the day was ours to explore.

We jumped in the creek, fished for tadpoles, and captured insects just to observe them for a little while before setting them free. Simplicity was magic. One of the moments I treasure most was sitting on my grandma’s bed, watching the rain hit the plantain leaves outside her window. The sound, the fresh smell, the rhythm of it—it’s still so vivid in my mind. Those summers taught me to appreciate nature, creativity, and the beauty in everyday moments.
