Daily Inspiration: Meet Debi Jean Osgood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Debi Jean Osgood.

Debi Jean Osgood

Hi, Debi Jean. Can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
At 63, I started teaching myself how to play the guitar. My only musical experience was karaoke. I quit my day job as a CPA, and I’m morphing into a rock star.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Oh Lord, the struggles; I somehow made it through the first six months. I was still hideous with the guitar, but some cool, friendly, real musicians told me I could sing, and they took me under their wing. I began performing in acoustic showcases with live audiences. Stage fright didn’t kill me. I stumbled onto making videos for YouTube and Facebook. I do a podcast vlog thing every week. I call it Debi Jean’s World, and I have a fabulous time making up my sets, my outfits, and a little chit-chat all under 20 minutes. I post on Wednesday, and I will do episode #171 this week. I hope to syndicate or become a super YouTuber.

Thanks for sharing that. Can you tell us more about your work next?
I started writing songs once I could play three chords on the guitar. This is when I began to fall in love with music. I could tell stories in song. I could write things that I needed to hear. I could give myself spiritual advice; the process is the best thing. I have a practice routine that keeps me sane and on track. I still do some CPA work to keep sharp, but music seems like brainy exercise and good for coordination. I’m proud that I have stuck with music. My weekly show inspires me, and my fun inspires others to pick up instruments in their old age. And my outfits are a source of entertainment for others. I’m told they watch the show to see what I wear. It’s all part of the creative process.

What matters most to you? Why?
Creativity. I feel like love is supposed to matter most, but Without my creative outlets, I would be so empty I wouldn’t be fit for love. However, love is a pretty damn big deal too. Love of self and others. It should be simple. Here are some lyrics from a song I wrote recently:

ABOUT LOVE
About Love, it’s an illusive butterfly
Reciprocated love that’s a whole other thing
With delicate wings
And a crystal for a heart
That’s Love

About Love, it’s an illusive butterfly
Blue flame is so seductive
Fire burning bright
The frozen ice queen melts like chocolate
She falls in love

About Love, it’s an illusive butterfly
Try to hold it in your hand
Slips through your fingers like water
Don’t try to push it
It’s like pushing a string
And you begin to wonder if you know anything

About Love
About this crazy world
So heavy on our shoulders
About the sea
It’s way beyond me
I just want to be free

In Love, that illusive butterfly
About Love, it’s an illusive butterfly
