Daily Inspiration: Meet Chyna Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chyna Smith.

Hi Chyna, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up, my mom and aunts always styled my hair in beautiful braids, which sparked my early interest in hair care. Like many young girls, I started by braiding my dolls’ hair, then eventually began practicing cornrows on my mom. Soon after, I was doing classmates’ hair for free at school as practice. I began doing my own hair around 8th grade, and as I improved, I started promoting my work. I graduated from Westside High School in 2023, and I’m currently pursuing my passion at Florida State College at Jacksonville Cosmetology program. By Fall 2025 I will be a licensed Cosmetologist in the state of Florida.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In 2020, during the height of COVID-19, I moved to Jacksonville at the age of 15 and began taking my work seriously. It was a challenging time, business was slow, and I had very few clients. I promoted myself in Facebook groups, but often encountered people who weren’t serious, including no-shows and last-minute cancellations. Some even criticized my work as a beginner. However, instead of letting it discourage me, it motivated me to work harder. I was determined to improve and prove the doubters wrong.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At the start of cosmetology school I’ve always said “I’m a braider”. I’ve came to the realization that I’m not just a braider, but a natural hair stylist who specializes in the protection of natural hair. My speciality is knotless braids and braided styles, but I offer locs re-twists and silk presses. I believe that my professionalism is what sets me apart from others as well as my personality and work. As my passion progressed I became a travel stylist, and soon hope to make passive income in the beauty industry.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I wouldn’t call it “luck” but my destined blessing. I’m pretty sure it’s because I pray and give thanks to the most high! “Faith without works is dead”, and I work hard for everything I have now. I know it’s the Lord and my guardian angels constantly working and looking out for me. I’m just following what he has planned out for me. I know that he will provide because he hasn’t showed me any different, he’s been good to me! Any obstacle that comes I know I can over come as long as I keep my faith.
