Today we’d like to introduce you to Velvet Eidson.
Velvet, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a vocal and songwriting coach based in Jacksonville, Florida.I teach a variety of genres, with a special focus in country, contemporary commercial, and musical theater. I am passionate about helping her students strengthen their voice technique and discover their unique identity as a performer.
I grew up singing in her family’s touring gospel group Velvet and the Evangels. I went on to study voice at Jacksonville University before moving to Nashville to pursue a career as a professional singer. As a member of the 3-person vocal group Dave & Sugar, I would tour & record all over the US before eventually returning home to Florida and opening my voice coaching studio.
I have developed a broad set of experiences including musical theater performance, singing with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, competing in the Miss America Organization as Miss Nashville, and composing/recording original music for film soundtracks. I earned my Certificate in Vocal Pedagogy with Distinction from the Voice Study Centre. As a self-proclaimed “voice nerd”, I love to study the science behind the art I teach by learning new skills each year to further my professional development.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I am very passionate about helping people find their voices and learn to make the sounds that they want to make. There have been some challenges along the way. Covid was very tough. Teaching is so personalized, and doing it online just wasn’t my favorite! I enjoy the one on one “in person” connection with my students.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
http://velvet-sings.com has all of my info on it, but to answer some of these questions for you, I meet my students right where they are and try to help improve their voice technique, songwriting, vocal health, confidence and stage presence. I am most proud of watching my students thrive. I have a student who was on American Idol, and one that is currently being considered for The Voice. The one thing that I am most proud of is that I was able to help a student with serious pitch issues go from that to now gigging regular and making money out singing and playing. Wow! That is my biggest flex. Also, I have a student who has Parkinson’s disease and she is also singing publicly on a regular basis. These unique challenges have made me proud. I would say that all of these things set me apart.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I like to listen to The Unhindered Voice podcast as well as The Intelligent Vocalist.
