Today we’d like to introduce you to Valarie Pothier-Forrester.
Valarie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been an artist most of my life, and began teaching at the University of Florida’s J. Wayne Reitze Union Arts and Crafts Center. I went on to work at the Florida Museum of Natural History as an art department. As a natural progression I finished my degree in Art Education and started teaching at the University Laboratory School. I was then moved to teach middle school for Alachua county and there I stayed for about 27 years. In the meantime I received my Master of Arts degree from UF. All this while I’m still creating and spent a fair amount of time painting in oils and practicing in plein air, (outside painting on the spot.) After retirement I went full time into painting and creation. I started a group in St.Augustine called Anastasia Plein Air. I am currently a member of the St. Augustine FineArtAssociation, The First Coast Plein Air Painters and a member of the Professional Artists of St. Augustine Fine Art Gallery, our city’s longest operating Art cooperative, where I serve as President.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think after a lifetime of creating and teaching, I see natural progressions with many ups and downs. When I comes to Art, it’s always a situation of knowing there’s so much more to learn, but not letting that deter you from the quest of mastery. Moving forward, and sometimes back is normal, even to this day!
As for teaching, the challenges were enormous! The best part is the kids, but there are administrative obstacles, state testing routines, philosophical differences and attitudes to deal with.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I work in oils, alcohol inks and colored pencil.
I lead a exam of accomplished artists in a gallery setting.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Find a good teacher, learn from others, be open, experiment to find out what works for you. Surround yourself with supportive people!
