Conversations with Tanya Kunda

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanya Kunda

Hi Tanya, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Salt Coffee’s journey began during my college years on the West Coast. Initially pursuing a medical career, I faced the common pressure within the Slavic community to become a nurse. However, as a young adult, I struggled to find my true passion. I explored various medical fields, from paramedicine to respiratory therapy, but ultimately realized that these paths weren’t for me.

My husband recognized my passion and potential, and encouraged me to pursue my dream in the coffee industry. He suggested opening a coffee cart when we moved to Florida. To support his education and our future home, I dedicated two years to working three jobs. His devotion to helping me achieve my dream, combined with my father’s teachings about the value of hard work, fueled my determination.

After moving to Florida, I secured a job as an Event Consultant at Luxe Party Rentals, which proved to be a stepping stone towards my goal. This role allowed me to build relationships with wedding planners and venues in Jacksonville, creating a supportive community for my future coffee venture.

The core value I’ve carried throughout my journey is treating everyone with kindness and practicing hospitality. The Idea behind the name “Salt” stems from Matthew 5:13-16. Christ calls us to be the “salt of the earth” and the “light of the world.” This metaphor represents the impact Christians are meant to have in the world. They are to be the seasoning and light in this bland and dark world and to strive to be like Christ. At Salt Coffee, this is foundational in how we operate to serve the community one cup at a time!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The most difficult part of this journey was the patience and sacrifice required to build a foundation for the future. Both David and I worked full-time jobs, so we had to learn how to manage our finances wisely and prioritize saving for the business. This involved making lifestyle adjustments and adopting a more simple approach to our spending habits.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I couldn’t have done this without my incredible husband, David. His unwavering belief in me and his willingness to dive headfirst into the business world have been my driving force. His constant reassurance and love have been my safety net, calming my fears and boosting my confidence. Together with our coffee cart consultant, Jonny Kupin from Selah Coffee Co. based in Denver, Co we’ve been able to navigate the struggles of starting a business. Jonny’s program has been crucial in organizing our finances, building our online presence, and securing necessary permits. Most importantly, he’s instilled in us the importance of a positive mindset and consistent effort. Having such a supportive community has been a game-changer, allowing us to celebrate our small and big wins, ask questions without fear, and learn from experienced entrepreneurs in his program as well.
