Conversations with Scott Berden

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Berden.

Hi Scott, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I moved straight out of my parents house at 18 and on to a sailboat full time. I have been on the water ever since. I’ve been a professional captain since I was 20 running everything from sailboats to 80 foot motor yachts. After the hustle and bustle of South Florida my wife and I sailed our sailboat North looking for a new home. After finding Amelia Island we decided to set up shop and share the serene experience of being on North Florida’s waters with everyone.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest challenges in operating a charter boat is getting the word out. We offer a very niche experience in a saturated market and it can be difficult to stand out in all the noise.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a professional captain who’s been fortunate to operate boats most only dream of seeing, let alone cruising on. Though one thing I have learned after years of operating large yachts is the most fun is usually had on small boats. That’s why we aim to provide yacht level service and an elevated vibe that’s attainable for everyone on a unique vintage boat.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
When starting out you always have to put customer experience above profit. If you’re getting into business only to make as much money as quickly as possible your chances of building something sustainable are slim to none.
