Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Hernandez.
Hi Megan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Like many small businesses, we began our journey in the comfort of our home. Our very first order came from Yulee Middle School for Teacher Appreciation Week. They believed in us even before we had a name or a storefront, and we have never forgotten this humble beginning. Each year, we celebrate teachers by showering them with our desserts and offering discounts for a whole month because a week is not enough.
Our name is inspired by our first product, the Breakable Heart. This gourmet chocolate heart shell is designed to be broken with a small mallet, revealing a hidden gift inside. Imagine an adult edible piñata! Initially, we were unsure of our path, but our passion for desserts and our commitment to our community propelled us forward.
Every Saturday, rain or shine, we brought our desserts to local markets. These experiences deepened our connection with the community and demonstrated that our products were worth braving hurricanes, floods, or scorching heat. The encouragement we received from our customers inspired us to venture into the wedding industry. In the spring of 2022, we sold our first wedding cake. Although we had no experience, it was exhilarating to be part of such a significant moment in someone’s life, something words can’t fully capture.
As we established our reputation within both our community and the wedding industry, our customers began to ask for more. They eagerly requested a storefront so they could enjoy our desserts anytime, not just at weddings or events. Taking their requests to heart, we reflected on our journey that started in February 2021 and envisioned a storefront in our future. With this new dream, we dedicated ourselves to hard work, and in June 2024, we opened our first storefront! This milestone was monumental for our family business and even more so for our community.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We faced numerous challenges along the way. From preventing our desserts from melting in the sweltering Florida summers to figuring out how to conduct tastings for our wedding clients, we had to learn everything on the fly. This experience taught us that while we may not always know the right steps to take, embracing failure is a vital part of learning. It offers invaluable lessons that far outweigh the fear of trying.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are renowned for our exceptional flavors. Countless hours are spent fine-tuning the ideal combination of “this” and a sprinkle of “that,” leading us to discover the perfect recipe that our clients will adore. Our flavors are not only intense but also possess a rich variety, skillfully balancing the right touch of sweetness.
While our flavors are a point of pride, we also excel in our design execution. We strive to turn our clients’ dessert dreams into reality. Whether it’s an Alice in Wonderland-themed dessert bar or a winter wonderland wedding experience, we pour our hearts into every order.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
When we decided to launch a bakery, we took a leap of faith. When we ventured into the wedding industry, we embraced uncertainty. When we opened a storefront, we again faced risks. They don’t call it “Risky Business” for no reason. Life is fundamentally about taking chances. You assess your risk/reward options, and if the potential reward justifies the risk, go for it.
One of my favorite quotes by Thomas Edison is, “You haven’t failed; you have only found 10,000 ways that have not worked.” This quote inspires me to dive deep into the realm of risk. I understand that every endeavor carries its own risks, but if we don’t take those chances, we may never uncover the opportunities that await us.
Remember, there was a time when you knew nothing. Taking risks and exploring new experiences is essential for learning and growth. Reconnect with that inner child who once wanted to try a sport they had never played before but took the plunge anyway. Life is much like that: you don’t know anything… until you do, you know!
