Today we’d like to introduce you to Margaret Juul.
Margaret, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
With a background in Fine Art and Interior Design, I’ve spent my life immersed in the visual arts—from curating spaces and designing textiles to painting and custom commissions. After years of working as an art buyer, interior designer, and gallery manager, I took a leap of faith in 2014 to follow my heart and create independently full-time.
My deep connection to water began early, growing up near the glistening, ever-changing tides of the New York coastal area and spending summers by the ocean. When I was just four years old in Miami Beach, a rip current pulled me under. In those brief, intense moments, the mesmerizing play of sunlight filtering through the crashing surf imprinted itself permanently on my imagination. Rather than leaving me fearful, it sparked a lifelong reverence for the sheer power, beauty, and mystery of the sea.
After college, while working hard to support my emerging art practice, I spent time working with an environmental remediation team. Seeing the urgent need for environmental stewardship firsthand opened my eyes and reshaped my lifestyle. Around the same time, I immersed myself in spiritual studies with the Self-Realization Fellowship, entering a transformative period of inner growth, mindfulness, and creative renewal. I knew then that my art needed to carry a deeper purpose: to celebrate, protect, and honor our natural world.
While working as an art buyer in the early 2000s, I noticed how many collectors were yearning for fresh, contemporary waterscapes that truly captured the soul of the coast—pieces that simply didn’t exist in the market. Driven by both intuition and purpose, I began crafting the Organic Coastal Waterscape Series.
Painting water became my personal sanctuary and catharsis, and I soon discovered that these fluid strokes of oil, ink, pastel, and acrylic offered that same profound sense of calm to others. In a fast-paced, often chaotic world, my goal as an artist is simple: to offer a gentle pause, a breath of tranquility, and a daily reminder of the serene beauty that surrounds us. Today, knowing these pieces bring light, elegance, and peace into homes and sacred spaces around the world is my greatest joy.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
After college, it quickly resonated that making a living as an artist would be a huge challenge. I went to work in the corporate world, before deciding to further my education from Fine Art to Interior Design. I worked as a licensed interior designer for seventeen years.
In 2011, while building a sculpture for a design display, an unfortunate workplace accident crushed both my hands and wrists. Doctors told me I would never paint again. Fortunately, after surgery, many months of therapy, hard work and sheer determination, I can continue the pursuit of my artistic ambition. I am filled with pride in my accomplishments in the face of adversity.
More recently, I have focused on healing myself and others, incorporating Reiki into my work to enhance energy.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My artistry is defined by fleeting glimpses and glistening light, with each piece created to inspire and heal through a breath-like rhythm. My work offers reflections of a moment in time, where my compositions serve as fresh, original expressions of the colors and patterns found in water in motion. Through visual art, I capture an unwavering hold on my spirit—guided by fluidity, intuition, and reflective volatility. My goal is for my art to breathe coherence into any space it inhabits.
Nature as Muse
Breath in Motion: The Mirror of Water and Light. Nature, particularly the element of water, is my profound muse. I perceive the world through the lens of a shimmering prism, discovering endless potentiality in every facet I observe. I invite you to take a breath and let the canvas speak.
Diverse Talents and Objectives
Beyond being an artist and textile designer, I am also a Level II Reiki Practitioner. My objective is to create work that fosters connection, inspires, soothes, and heals. My extensive portfolio spans painting, illustration, interior design, and textile design.
Professional Recognition and Exhibitions
Over the past three decades, I have cultivated a wide network of devoted supporters. My works are prominently displayed in settings ranging from celebrity homes and corporate lobbies to international commercial and hospitality venues. I have also had the privilege of exhibiting internationally in galleries and museums across the globe—from San Diego to New York, Iceland to Miami, and London to Beijing.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
My favorite book bay far lately has been ‘The Creative Act; The Way of Being: by Rick Rubin. Having been brought up with a huge Taoist influence, this book is gold to me. As for podcasts, I watch comedies such as Amy Poehler or Conan O’Brien. We need more clean laughter in the world. For apps, I love Pinterest and Instagram where I have my algorithm set to art, design, and healing arts from around the world. No negativity and certainly no politics.
