Today we’d like to introduce you to Khashilah Butler.
Can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today. You can include as little or as much detail as you’d like.
Thank you for having me! My passion for cooking started when I was in the culinary arts program throughout my high school career. Since high school, I pursued the culinary world casually through journalism, but it wasn’t until 2019 that I desired to take this lifelong passion seriously. I decided to enroll in my local culinary school and that experience is what led to me creating The Kulinary Co, LLC!
In 2020, I contemplated of non-traditional ways that I could use this culinary degree. I knew that working in the restaurant industry was not for me, but I still wanted to create in some capacity. Once again, I went back to my roots and realized that I’m great at meal prepping. I knew it was an efficient way to regulate my meals, prioritizing convenience as well as my health.
In Fall 2020, armed with my social media followers and a Canva flier, I launched the first season of my meal prep service. The response blew my mind! In addition to weekly orders, I was invited to join health and wellness partnerships, host personal cooking classes and even cater events. My community responded so well and I’m beyond grateful for this.
Fast forward to Spring 2021, I officially launched The Kulinary Co, LLC, the sophisticated meal prep service and culinary journey that merges nutrition and culture.
Has it been a smooth road? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No success story is good without a few setbacks.
The first time I applied to culinary school was in 2015. I was graduating with my first degree from The University of Central Florida and knew that my next step was to attend my dream culinary school. However, due to financial reasons, those dreams were denied.
That blew my confidence for a while, and I ended up working a corporate job. Four years later, I began to have the urge to cook again and decided to enroll in our local culinary school. My life literally changed in a semester-I was rejuvenated and had hope for a future in culinary arts. Then COVID-19 hit and shut everything down, including a once in a lifetime internship opportunity.
In 2020, with the launch of my meal prep service, I learned that entrepreneurship is rewarding but so exhausting. The time, resources and constant need to keep up with marketing was overwhelming. I’ve had to pivot so much during the life of my business. No amount of research could have prepared me for the real live work.
We’d love to learn more about your work. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am the Owner and Chef of The Kulinary Co, a gourmet meal prep service. We create fresh and delicious meals for individuals who are on a journey of sustainable health and desire the convenience of gourmet, nutrient-dense meals.
On the flip side, The Kulinary Co. represents everything food culture. Originating from the South with over 10 years of food industry experience, our Founder, Chef Kay, is here to take you on a boundless journey through the culinary world.
Since being in business for the past year, I’ve had the honor of earning multiple partnerships with local businesses, as well gaining a social media presence. I’ve gained loyal clients and developed the ability to expand my services digitally, with online consultations and specialized meal plans.
Who else deserves credit – have you had mentors, supporters, cheerleaders, advocates, clients or teammates that have played a big role in your success or the success of the business? If so – who are they and what role did they plan / how did they help.
First, I believe The Kulinary Co. is a gift from God and I’m thankful to be able to use my passion in a monumental way. I’ve had so many mentors and supporters who have kept me going. My mom, who instilled in me her entrepreneurial spirit. My high school culinary arts teachers Chef Stehlin and Chef Hanapel who sparked my passion for cooking. My mentor and friend, Sydney Drake of 95 Elite LLC, who walked with me to create the blueprint of a successful meal prep business. Lauren Titus of Edible Northeast Florida, who helped me discover that the culinary world is broader than the kitchen. My family, friends, and beloved partners and clients who have committed to their support of The Kulinary Co, LLC. None of what I have would be possible without you behind me, inspiring me, and challenging me daily. Thank you!
