Conversations with Kelsey Vassallo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Vassallo.

Hi Kelsey, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have always been a creative person and have tried my hand at so many different things. One thing I always loved to do was paint. I went to art school for two years but decided to leave, thinking I could never make any money with my art. It wasn’t until three years ago, I was on Pinterest and came across clay jewelry, that I realized I could create a business out of it. I started hand painting a lot of designs and fell in love!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I am trying to maintain the business while working a full-time day job, especially with the change in the creative culture with social media. Sometimes social media can feel like I’m forcing my creativity instead of letting it flow freely. It’s all about balance and finding a healthy balance. It’s good to remember that I’m human and need breaks; when I take the breaks I need, my creativity flourishes.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create colorful clay earrings. I am originally from Charleston, South Carolina, and I love bright, colorful patterns. A lot of my inspiration comes from the city. I feel I am most known for my hand-painted patterns and bright colors. I feel that sets me apart from other clay jewelry makers. I find a lot of clay artists tend to create what’s trendy, and while I understand that, I’ve always wanted to be someone that thinks outside the box.
