Conversations with Kate Gomes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Gomes.

Hi Kate, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Dance has been a constant in my life since early childhood. I was born and raised in New York and began teaching ballroom dance in Manhattan in 2009. Not long after, I managed a dance studio on Fifth Avenue and began competing professionally in the American Smooth Ballroom division. The competitive circuit was both rigorous and incredibly rewarding, offering the chance to grow as a performer and connect with some of the most inspiring figures in the industry.

As a result of my professional dance career, doors opened to perform in some extraordinary settings- celebrity weddings, The Rainbow Room, Lincoln Center Jazz, Rockefeller Center, the HBO Film Festival, high-profile charity galas, and the Snapple Theater Center. My work has also been featured on national television, including America’s Got Talent. What began as a humble operation in 2011 expanded into full-scale performances featuring professional dance troupes and curated entertainment for high-end events.

Along the way, I met my now husband, a fellow creative in the entertainment industry who has toured globally in professional stage productions. Our son is already following in our creative footsteps, making Broadway history as one of the youngest cast members to appear in a Tony-award-winning play.

In 2022, we expanded to Jacksonville where Prima Dancesport offers private and group dance instruction, as well as custom entertainment for weddings and special events. I continue to manage and produce talent in New York, while cultivating our presence here in Northeast Florida. To this day, my most favorite thing is working with wedding couples. Helping them create a meaningful, memorable first dance is always an incredible privilege.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I think anyone in the entertainment industry (or any entrepreneur, really) would agree that the road is rarely ever smooth. There have been seasons of abundance, and there have been times when I was left seriously wondering if I made the right choices. The reality of working in this field is that you pour so much of yourself- your time, energy, creativity, and heart, into everything you do. That kind of investment can be exhausting, heart-breaking, but it is also what makes it so deeply rewarding.

There have been moments of doubt and setbacks, but also incredible highs: connecting with audiences, building lasting relationships with clients and fellow artists, and seeing a vision come to life on stage or at a special event. Each challenge taught me resilience and pushed me to evolve. Over time, I have come to embrace the unpredictability of this journey. It keeps me grounded, grateful, and motivated to keep creating.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Prima Dancesport offers professional dance instruction and tailored entertainment for events of all kinds. I am known for creating unique, personalized dance experiences, whether guiding a couple through their first dance or producing dynamic, full-scale performances for high-profile events.

In addition to working with adults, I have always enjoyed working with children. My time spent in schools has profoundly shaped my approach as both an educator and an artist.

Like many in the entertainment industry, I wear many hats. This field demands flexibility, and I have embraced that in everything that I do. What sets Prima Dancesport apart is the personalized attention I give to every client and project, blending professionalism with heart. I care deeply about the people I work with and the experiences I help bring to life.

What I am most proud of is the trust people place in me during some of the most meaningful moments of their lives. Being able to do this work while continuing to grow as an artist, educator, and entrepreneur is something I am truly grateful for.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
In the Jacksonville area, in particular, I see tremendous potential for growth. There is a vibrant and expanding arts scene here, and I hope to deepen my involvement with local event planners, fellow artists, and other creative professionals. The industry is calling for more versatility and collaboration than ever before, and I am excited to grow with it, while continuing to bring joy and artistry to every person and event I have the privilege to work with.
