Conversations with Joshua Levine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Levine.

Hi Joshua, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Cedar Acres is a small, family-run, 10-acre farm specializing in breeding the remarkable Kunekune pig. As proud members of the American Kunekune Pig Society (AKKPS), we are dedicated to promoting this exceptional breed to other small farms and homesteaders. Our breeding program focuses on producing purebred Kunekune pigs that meet the AKKPS conformation standards, ensuring they possess the distinctive physical traits and gentle temperament that the breed is known for. We offer registered breeders, registered pets, and barrows.

Our pigs live their best lives, enjoying the freedom to forage in our four spacious pastures. They receive all necessary vaccinations and are socialized daily to maintain their friendly and placid nature. Kunekune pigs thrive on human interaction, making them excellent pets that are easy to care for. By choosing Cedar Acres, you are supporting a farm that adheres to the highest ethical breeding practices, ensuring the health and well-being of our animals.

In addition to our breeding program, we have recently introduced a meat program offering prime cuts, bacon, and sausage. Our commitment to sustainable farming practices and the superior quality of our products makes Cedar Acres the perfect choice for those seeking the finest Kunekune pigs and pork products.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Managing livestock presents inherent challenges. Our primary objective is to ensure optimal environmental conditions and health for our pigs. Regrettably, unforeseen circumstances such as illness or accidental mortality among piglets can occur. The loss of an animal prompts a critical review of our practices and protocols. Ultimately, we bear responsibility for every life introduced to our farm. While comprehensive planning is our aim, complete foresight is unattainable. Furthermore, significant financial investments are required for essential infrastructure, including fencing, shelters, and farm equipment. Other factors, such as sourcing appropriate feed, securing large animal veterinary services, and managing weather conditions, can also significantly impact farm operations.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
All registered breeders that sell their livestock to other small homesteaders offer mentorship. All that promote this breed want to see new breeders be successful. We spend alot of time answering questions from prospective buyers and are only a phone call away in emergencies.
